LABOUR GOVERNMENT'S DIFFICULTIES,

The Labour Government are finding it more and more difficult to discharge election promises. - On the question of anemployment this has been demonstrat- d by debates in the House of Commons

gun a week ago and continued this i week. They are unable to deliver the goods. They are no more able to solve the problem of unemploymen: than other Governments that have been in office le- fore theas, although they professed to have a sure remedy when ther appealed for support to the country at the General Election.

i Of course, a wise observer of political Affairs is not surprised. After all, o Government can produce, a remedy for such a deep-seated and wide-spread avil as unemployment. Mr. Tom Shaw, the burly Minister of Labour, in a phrase which has already become historie, "asked the House of Commons whether they ex- pected him to provide work na a con- juror produces rabbits out of a hat. If it could be done with so much ease and dexterity there would never be any ex- cuse for permitting men to stand idle. But all experience goes to show that no Government possesses the power to get rid of this great social and economic evil, which has been ever with us, but has become accentuated as a result of con- ditions arising out of the war.

Now, seeing that we have to pay our war debt to America. while our debtors have not paid us a farthing, the declara tion of signor Mussolini is of the highess importance. It puts a new face on the matter of the war debts. Obviously if Italy intends in due time to begin pay nient it will be difficult for our French friends to repudiate their obligations. I learn that considerable progress is bring made, with the construction of the new super power Imperial Wireless Station at Rugby. ROYAL ECONOMICS

It is interesting to learn on excellent authority the reason why His Majesty the King has taken to the practice of holding two Royal Courts on successive day. It is quite an innovation, and it has been very much discussed in circles concerned, though, generally, the inup vation has been heartily welcomed.

The reason, it appears, is one" of economy. Few of His Majesty's subjecta have ever had an opportunity of realis- ing how seriously the Royal Household set itself to the task of economising wherever possible, during the lean war years, and both the King and Queen are carrying on the methods then adopted of saving expense.

By having two Courts on successive, days it is possible to make the costly fioral "decorations serve for both orca- sions, instead of, as in the old dayı, having to be thrown away at the end of a few hours ceremonial. It is, in- derd, declared by one in a position to know that, in spite of the rise in prices, every ceremony at Court now-a-days actually costs less than it did before the war—a tribute surely to the good house- keeping of Queen Mary,

IRISH BOUNDARY, DISPUTŽ.

In spite of a good deal which is said to the contrary, I understand the pro- spects, of a peaceable and friendly settle- ment of the Irisk frontier dispute remain good. The Colonial Secretary is going to do nothing at all in a hurry, and information comes to me from one who is in a position to know exactly what is happening that both Sir James- Oraig and Mr. Cosgrave have been privately in communication with Mr. Thomas, and that both are willing to make concessions -when the right moment comes

That indeed, is the crux of the pro blem as it existe to-day-waiting for the right moment. At present neither the President of the Free State nor the Premier of Northern Ireland can act freely. There is a definito.assurance that if the two statesmen were left fros to meet the Colonial Secretary and bar- gain, the whole matter would be ended; in a few hours.

HOW TO GET GOOD SERVICE

FROM

MICHELIN TYRES.

Keep tyres proped up to correct pressure for the load they have to carry. We can tell you what this should be,

When tyres are under inflated there is continual internal friction between the foundation cord and the rabber, causing overheating of the tyre and consequent rapid deterioration.

Water can also enter causing rust, resulting eventually in the rims having sharp edges which out the walls of the tyre near the head.

they

Most cars in Hongkong run on under inflated tyres with the above disastrous results.

Have

your wheels examined front and rear for trueness and tracking alignment. If are at fault in this respect the tread of the cover is subject to a grinding action which quickly destroys the cover.

Keep tyres free from oil and grease.

Start and stop gently and take comers slowly.
