EMPIRE COTTON. SUDAN IRRIGATION SCHEMES
The schein, for the irrigation of th Sudan tizira- great plain tying be tween the converging White and Blue Niles, which aut at Khartum-originate in the mind of Sir William Garstin us long ago na 1800. It is concerned with au ares of 30,000 acres teetelaing
between
the Jatitudes of.14 and 35 and along
the Blue Nile, and by means of future additional works it is anticipated that a total area of 1,000,000 acres wil eventually be pince under irrigation and mule available for cultivation.
Tais subsequent enlargement of the schrine has not been lost sight of दोसक ghing the dam and the bed regulator of the main ennal, which will be capable of mating the requirements when the time becomes ripe.
storage reservoir formed by the dun extend practically to Singo, i distance of 5 miles upstream, and will h
ble of impoasting sou
G36 million motres of water 49,000 ênbie feet, which will be tive irrigation of the larger area An Important point is that the water res quired for the purpos
ow of the prescri? scheme is surplus to Egypt's requirements. When the tie has arrived for the pro javed extension as additional dam will be built ort. the upper reaches of the Blue Nile, which w ensure that the Sudan Gezina will only employ water which would otherwise reach the sen,and so run Ter Waster

The cost of the present scheme, is being met by loan raised in England under iovernment guarantee in 1913-14, 1919, and 1920. amounting to a total of £13,500,000. The scheme comprises a dam at Makwar. a main canal 89 intles in length, the first. 35 miles of which, to the point where the Trst branch takeoff--ha- a bed width of about $75, 533 mile of minor canals. 3.125 miles of subsidiary canals, and 5,695 miles of field channels,
The total excavation in the minor and Subsidiary canals and Seld chumanely alone (without the main canal), amount to nearly eight times the volume of the Great Pyramid at fiizeh. What will, per haps, give a better idea of the gormous amount of digging involved is the fact that if the excavated soff were made into brick they would suffice for the construe tion of a wall, St. high and Ift. thick entirely round the earth at the Equator The larger canals are being dug by Ameri- ean Bucyrus excavators, working on the drag-line principle, and ches huge machines are working day and night to complete the work within the contract, time.
ས་
The construction of the 5 canals and the actual preparation of the "land for sowing are being undertaken by this Sudan Plantations Syndicate, a scompany that has already bad considerable experience of cotton cultiviation in this area; while the major construction work has been entruste el to the firm of Messrs. S. Pearson and Son,
who
bave ortaken to havy" the works in a sufficiently advansivi state ta permit of a cotton crop being raised in 1920. It is proposed by the "syndicate to divide the 200,000 acres into 20 stations of about 15,000 heres, much block being chief inspector. The syn- managed by diente' will abu control the enltivation and erect the weissary ginning factorist HUGE COTTON AREA...
The immensity of the Sudan Planta- tion undertaking will be grasped when it is remembered that this new cotton area is something like seven times the size of the larment sugly-held cotton-growing con- gern in Američa. The dam is a solid mass onry structure of granite quarroal in the neighbouring hills of Segadi, and is Roatl<kri
on a deke of crystalino rock that It outerups in the river at this point. is estimated that over 15,405,000 cubic feet {ai tasonry and 100,000 tons of Portland will be employed in the construc tion of the dam. Its length is nearly two miles, and the maximum height nearly. 901 There will be 80 main sluices, ft.) high
and ft. wide; 14 cana) regulator shilcers, 17ft, high and just over 10ft. wide; and 112 spillways. Approximately 3.300 tons of ironwork will be used in thịt sluice gates and operating machinery, which is being supplied by Mosses, Ran- sons and Bagirr, of Ipswich. ·
The completion of the Sedan Gezira ingation scheme will not only be a mile- stone in Great Britain's Imperial policy. but it is confidently expected that it will Inaugurate a period of commercial pros perify in a country where many British Byes have been laid down' for the advanes of civilization.
