WHEN CHINA WAS IN HER

HEYDAY.

From an article in The Tea and Caffre Journe (New York); we extrust the following

:་

Until about 30 years ago, the word "tea a" in commerce invariably called up visious of China, No other and was thought of as a source of the Oriental cerage. But the last half-century has seen the advance of other ten-growing countries, until today China occupies à minor position in our trade and one of steadily decreasing importance. The tra she sent us in 1800, about 5,000,000 pounds, was practically all we bought By 1950 this has increased nearly sixfold, China in that year sending us 95,743,000 pounds. Fifty years later, in spite of the fact that our population had grown at an in- precedented rate, tea shipments. from China were only 30 per cent. greater, the 1900 figure being 12,283,000 pounds. Since the early years of this century there has been a rapid decline, autil is 1920 we bought only 10,625,000 pounds of Chinese tea, only a fourth of our purchases - in 1900, and but little more than the aver- age yearly trade of 100 years ago. The imports last year showed a considerable upward spring, amounting to 19.800.000 pounds, but it is hardly likely that it augsts a return to former high levels.

Ching's place has been taken very largely by her next-door neighbour, Japan. The way was cleared for the flow of Japan's ten neross the Pacife when Commodore Perry's feet in 1883 opened the door that has never since been closed. Following his visit there is no evidence in our trade records of rhe entrance of this new fuctor until 1540. when a niodest shipment of 35,012 pounds appears eredit ed to Japan. Once started, the com merce, throve mightily. In 10 years, by 1970, it had grown to 8,823,000 pounds, and, in 40 years to over 33,000,000 pounds, or about as much as China was sending. It remained at that figure for a quarter of a century, bat in the period before the "war it reached 40,000,000 and 50,000,000 The peak of the trade was pounds. reached in 1913, when Japan, sent us 56,437,000 pounds Imports then fell off considerably, and for the past two years they have stood at 38.000.000 pounds. about the same as 25 years ago.

ENTRANCE OF THE PRESENT GREAT PRODUCERS.

The entrance of India, Ceylon, and Dutch East Indies into the list of the world's great tea raisers is reflected by a slowly increasing trade with these regiops dirget and by the knowth of imports from the mother countries, England and the Netherlands. Direct imports of tea from British India date from the middle of the last century. By 1900 we were bringing several million pounds from the "British East Indies, the figure in that year being 4475,000. This Eas increased steadily year by year, until in 1922 it was 20,0-10,000 pounds and in 1921-23,746,000-

Of the 1922 imports Cesion costrin 14,340,000 ponds. The Ceylon trade has askdently grown much more rapidly than that of India.

The importation of tea from the Dutch East Indies picked up gradually from a few thousand pounds at the beginning of the rentury to 114,000 pounds. in. 1913 When the war closed. The usual trade routes to Europe. this tea sought and found a market in the United States. and in 1878 the immense figure of 25,807,000 pounds was reached. Most of this trade went back to Europe when Borami conditions were restored, but its influence is still felt. In 1922 wie bought 7,106,000 pounds of Dutch East India tea, and in 1923 10,20,000 pounds. *

The relative standing to-day of these four sources of our tea is shown by the following figures:

“CONSCIENCE MONEY,”.

"Conscience-money of which Mr. Snowden mentioned some curious cases in his Budget speech, should have been trented by the late William James us a variety of religious experience. It shows that remorse, though a rare phenomenon, is a genuine one, and is to be found even. in such unlikely quarters as the soul of the income-tax payer. Of course, we nee knowledge and confess our sins in church (or we used to), but repentance must be very well-developed before it geix to the length of restitution: especially restitu tion to the State, an entity which man- ages to excite most of the Emotions ex- cept affection. Yet there are periodic driblets of ill-gotton gains into the Terasury to testify to the continued existence of Conscience, just as there are occasional text on the front page of The Timer to testify to the persistency of the missionary spirit.

I believe (says a writer in The Uhatever) the biggest instalment of con science-money on record was £5,000, xent. to Mr. McKenna in 1016, and acknowled- ged by him in The Turd • On another oration the Chancellor acknowledged receipt of “two bars of gold (dimen "sions not stated);nad small sums are not infrequent indeed, it may be, said that the smaller the frail, the more sensitive the conscience. About 1870 a boy stole an apple from a stall in the Congate, Edinburgh, and in 1910 the Edinburgh Town Council received a letter from bi in Vancouver. enclosing a dollar, to be devoted to public, purposes by way of roslitation, Think of a man going shout ander that intolerable burden of guilt for forty years ALDA

Now give him SANATOGEN

to build him up.

Thousands of physicians, with the implicit confidence engendered by years of ex- perience, rely upon Sanat- ogen to overcome the weak- ness of nerve and body so often encountered after ill-- ness. When the time ar- rives you must help nature' in her task of imparting new vigour with Sanatogen, the best of all restoratives.

Sir Hall Caine, the eminent. wither, writea:

**I have lately had further proof of the efficacy of Sanatogen in build. ing up and restoring the nervOLA system under condititus of severe mental and emotional strain."

A goodly proportion of the 21,000 doctors who have written, in praistof Sanatogen, take it regularly then- selves, and for the same reasons as they prescribe it for their patients. They know that Sanniogen contains in abundance the special nourish- ment demanded by the nerves and body to fight successfully against over-strale, nerve weakness, and their attendant ils of indigestion dyspepsia and debility. Beneft by their coa- sidered opinion.

HOW TO GET GOOD SERVICE FROM

MICHELIN TYRES.

ncép tyres pumped up to correct pressure for the load they have to carry. We tell you what this should be,

сап

When tyres are under inflated there is continual internal friction between the foundation cord and the rubber, causing overheating of the tyre and consequent rapid deterioration.

Water can also enter causing rust, resulting eventually in the rims having sharp. dges which cut the walls of the tyre near the head.

Mest cars in Hongkong run on under inflated tyres with the above disastrous results. Have your wheels examined front and rear for trueness and tracking alignment. If they are at fault in this respect the tread of the cover is subject to a grinding action which quickly destroys the cover.

Keep tyres free from oil and grease.

Start and stop gently and take corners slowly.
