METAL OF THE FUTURE. CHEMISTS HOPES FROM: ALUMINIUM.

The trade outlook in Bangkok is most critical. Over a score of Rice mills have closed down through less in business and lack of paddy supplies.
Shipping: eireles have to lacé also 25 severe set-hack; many steamers have recently left the port with half cargo load only,
The cause of this slump in the rice trade can be summed up as follows: C
(1) The fariners refuse to sell parkly unless they are paid the price they ask After three successive years of a good sice Prop most of them are a bit well off and able to retain supplies, selling only when necessary. They also say that to stock paddy is safer than to hold muey; robbers would not molest them.
(2) To run a rien till the present high. price of paddy must be paid. Severe losses are the result as the rice cannot fetrh proportionate prices in Hongkong and Singapore, where the competition of Saigon and Rangoon rice is very keen.
(a) The exébange value of the Tical is too high compared with the carreney of our rice producing neighbours.
The following are among the rice mills which are idle at present

PROTECTION FOR CEBU CEMENT.
The Manila Times says: To protect the Cebu Portland Ceaient Company frana enormous losses which may result froin' the competition inaugurated recently hy foreign interests especially Japanese, the Council of. State at its last meeting a proved a resolution ordering the purchas ing agent to buy all the cement that the 5Insalar Governincat may need from June 11th to July 5th from the company. The buying price will be the same as that current in day, which is about P1 higher than present prices.
The policy, was adopted by the Council upon the receipt of a letter from C. F. Massey and Paciano Dizon, directors of the company, seeking help from the Government against the wild cutting of prices by foreign erment dealers
At the Council's mecting on June 11th. the Governor-General enlled the attention of the department secretaries to 'n ruj communication from Messrs. Mausey al Dizon to the effect that foreign com pelitors are dumping their cement upon the local market regardless of coat."...!
The Apo cement of the Cebu Portland Cement Company in May sold at P5.50 per barrel delivered at Manila At such price, the company scarcely gets P3 per barrel after deducting the post of pro- duction alone, it is declared.
