Owing to the lack of any kind of ron- trol in the past, whaling in the northern seas had reached its last gasp: greed had over-reached itself, when, in 1984, the exploitation" of the new field of thei Antarctic began. From the first. huntingtri was pursued with an intensiveness un Al

The object of the projected expedition is primarily to obtain evidence at first hand by men of scientific training as to the species now being bonted, their re- fative numbers and the effect of the fish- ing the sun. We await, with some un- sity, their report as to the fate of the humpback. It is also a matter of real importance to know whether this species, and the rorquals, which now alone affor! profitable fishing, are specifically iden tical with those of the seas north of the Equator. Au.first sight this might seem

LABELLING THE WHALE

To set these deibts at rest & system of marking individual is to be tried. Small darts, bearing a metal label, are to be fired from a specially designed cross-bow into the thick layer of "filul- her ; of the back. As this is several inches thick, and the barbe can penetrate no further, the while will probably be unconscious that he is thus labelled. But, snoer or later, more or fewer of these standard fearers will he re- covered. If any of such tablets are taken from animals killed in African waters dusing, the breeding season, then the intentity of the Anturetic and the African herds will be established; and any legis Intion found necessary must apply to "both regions.

While the whalers-almost exclusively Norwegians profess themselves anxious not to pursue their quarry to the verge of extermination, their practice in the past, and the inroads they have made see the Autantie fishing began, show that they must be saved, from themselves. Long years ago the right-whele 6bery, in. the Bay of Biscay, came to an end for Flack of prey The Dundee fleets, which set out year by year for Grêmuland and the bays of Spitzbergen, hrein longerin. The existence for the same reasopi.. grey whale, which haunted the lagoons, of California, disappeared long ago. Unless then something is done, and done speedily the Antarctic fishing will share the saine dismal fate.

15*

But there is another side to this ques tion which is generally overlooked. The Crown Agents for the Colonies are con- cerned, and very properly, with the com mercial side of whaling. The whales are a valuable asset; one may say, without exaggeration, extremely valuable asset; and on this account it is a tutter. for regret that this fishing is not entirely in British hands. The other side, "how- uver, is the concern of the Dian of science. Be the demands of commeren what they may, they should not be allow d to wipe out one species after another.
