WHITE COAL "IN SCOTLAND.CE. WARREN CO, LTD.

HARNESSING THE FALLS, OF)

BEN NEVIS Those who have long been advocating OFFICES & the utilisation of the water powers of GODOWNE the Scottish Highlands (writes James Lumsden in a "London paper) will bail the announcement that the Government has sanctioned a great scheme fotehar nessing the watershed of Ben Nevis as the dawn of a new,eri..

The region is probably one of the best for electricity in the British Islands Ben Nevis is one of the three or four Betish mountains which have an eternal coronal of anow--the white coal of the Swiss and Italian engineers, who have developed the water-power of the Alps on their northern, and southern sides.

Last autumo 1 visited the Val d'Aosta in Northern Italy, where electrical power is obtained from water upon an enormous scale. I could not but think of the superior advantages of the Spean into which the corries on the northern slopes of Ben Nevis pour their copious floods,

It is from rivers very similar to the Spean, the Dochart, or the Tile, whose Ingrents descend over an endless succes sion of cascades, that the Italian engine- ers delight to derive the power that now drives Factories Lombardy

The Ben Nevis watershed is close to the sea-close to Loch Linnlie, the "lake of pools so named from it depth. Thence ships can sail down the broad Firth of Larne to the open Atlantic From Inverlochy, where the famous battle between Montrose and Argyll was fought, an open plain extends to Spear -Bridge, a plain that could accommodate a large factory town.

Elec-

If water-power is destined to bring population back to the Highlands-as well it may the scenic glories of the Gaeldom would not be marred. trically driven factories do not belch forth smoke: they do not bias the land- scape or dim the sunlight over whole shires.

In places like Como, Lugano, Lecce, and many Swiss towns the fairest laad- capes are not affected by the proximity of white, coal" Eactories. Along the shores of the Italian lakes tourist hotels embowered in folinge and husy works that feed native mouths exist side by aide.

CARRYING THE COAL,

The difference between Scotland and Northern Italy-the great arena of water. power is that whereas Italy has no black coal, that mineral is highly develop ed in Scotland. Black coal is the founda- | '« tion of the shipbuilding of the Clyde, of the iron, the engineering, and all thu other industries of Central Scotland.

Hitherto when white coal has ousted black coal the latter has generally been brought from far away, in the little kingdom of Scotland both would be found in: situ."-the "white" coal" on the mountains and the black coal in tha deep carboniferous strata that stretch from Fife to Kyle.

For just as coal can be carried from Hamilton to the Highlands, so electric power could be arrived from the Gramp ians all over the Lowlands. In Lombardy electricity is transmitted over greater distances than the distance that separates Athol, the innd of big boiling, buros, from the Scottish central depression where all the manufactures Bourish.

It is not the conversion of water; power to electricity that is the must wonderful sight in Northern Italy. It is the traus mission of enoriaus powers over "great distances from the Alpine Valleys" to Turin, Milan, Bergamo, Brescia, and many other ancient and famous places:

Electric trestles and wires-huge struc- tures are spreading over the plains of the Po, the Adding and even of Venetia Ike a gossamer. Hundreds of miles of main-line railway will soon be electrified. Electrification is creeping southwards from Genon to Pisa,

In Scotland the confict between, "white" und black roal would be waged. on equal terms. As distance counts in modern engineering they are found to gether, side by side.

Metaphorically speaking it may be a question of tirab when the snows of Ben Maedhni and Schiehallion could be "tipped" in the Clyde Valley in opon competition with coal

It may be that for economy coal would long hold its own. Even in "Northern italy the battle, it is said: will, take fifty years yet, but electricity is winning every day, and it does all the new work." In order to be cheap gnough coal would need to be won in the future in a much more scientific manner than "at présent. If it could be excavated mechanically in great quantity and at a low cost it might endure until the accessible measures are werked out at some distant datereng

Even so industry would fit to the. hills, creeping up the valleys where the water falls are, as one anes to-day in Switzer land, France, and Italy.

THE PERSONAL - TOUCHIN BUSINESS.

COMMERCLUL TRAVELLERS STILL NEEDED.

presid

Mr. R. Burtou, of Nottingham,” ing at the nual conference of the National Union of Commercial Travel- lers, hell in London recently, said they bad been told by some people from time to time that the commercial traveller.as such was a passing phase, that he came in with the introduction of steam, and that he was going out with the introduc tion of the telephone and the parcel post. He did not belove it. He still believed that, notwithstanding the telephone and the pazeris post, proprietary articles, and other things that helped eliminate the commercial traveller, they had hot yet eliminated him; they had not elimin ated the personal touch. They could talk through the telephone, write letters, sad send telegrams, but after all the commer cial traveller was the intelligence dopart-, ment of his firm, and acting as such formed the human touch, bringing - to- gether the firm and its clients. The com mercial traveller still endured sa a very important part of the commercial world.

The Day of the Knight is Here !

IT IS THE

WILLYS-KNIGHT

Simplest and most trouble-free type of motor ever invented.

It has the most distnctive and gracefully balanced body of any car

in the market,

L-The Willys-Knight car is the four cylinder motored car that makes the six

unnecessary..

The Knight motor is steam principle. The valves are two cylindrical siceras with rectangular slots or ports which when they register with each other and the porta in the block allow the ingress and egress of the gases without obstruction. The wide open passages, particularly on the exhaust sido, permit a more thorough cleaning of the burnt gay from the combustion chamber than any other type of motor, so that every ounce of energy availablo is utilized Im the explosive mixture, which gives us such tremendous power

رہو

2-It has no valve to grind and no carbon to clean.

The combustion chamber is completely earrounded by water and an alloy piston noted, for its great hea radiating qualities is ment so neither the combustion chamber nor the head of the piston gets bot enough to bake the residue from the exposed gases to form carbon while there is still enough heat maintained to handle the explosive mixture effectively.

3-It is the only type of motor that improves with use.

White carbon can not form in the countrustion chamber, still a certain amount of the residue from the burn gas works up behind the wide sealing ring in the cylinder head and, as this building in process obtains, it keeps pushing this sealing ring more tightly against the inner users until it completely sent the compression chamber developing more power with every mile the motor is drawn.

4. It is the only type of motor that wears in while other wears out.

All parts in the Willys-Knight car aro acabled with wide clearance between each other and oil is forced into them clearances under heavy pressure so that the entire assembly is lapping or wearing in on those heavy Elms of cil instead of wearing out. In other words, every bearing in this motor is an oil bearing instead of a metal to metal besting which is necessary in the construction of a poppet valve motor in order to keep it quiet with subsequent quick, wear and noise.

Bangīt has eliminated one hundred and sixty two quick wearing parts necessary in the operation of a cylindersd poppet valve motor. There are no hammering parts such a came striking against pash, rode, prah rods"against- valve wiems, or valve, bends mapping back into their seats through the medium of heavy springs, etc.
