TREATMENT DURING

TRANCES.

CHARGE AGAINST FAITH HEALER

FALLA

At Wokingham, Berkshire, recentä, Frederick Joseph Jones, described as a faith healer, of Wimbledon, "was sum- moned Under the Vagrancy Act passed 100 years ago for having by subtle means and devices" imposed cù"people at Twyford, Berkshire,

It was stated that the case arose out of the death of George Bosley, of Staines, Middleses, at un inquest b whom Jones offered to go intors trafen and produce an African spirit doctor.

Mr. Bosley's widow said her husband died on March 28th Jones held macet. ings at the Roses and Crown Hotel, Twyfurd, which started with a hymn and a prayer for patients, who then came up singly and in a chair behind which Jones stood.

Jones then went into a trance, during which he examined and prescribed fur the patients., Jones did not tell the people how he found out what was the matter with them. They' were led to believe that a medicine iuan or a spirit doctor came to him.

Superintendent Goddard: Did you believe it?—Yes.

Mr. Bosley said that at the inquest à doctor said that if her husband had bad; proper treatment death might not have occurred. She was not deceived or, im- posed on by Jones and gave him "ap money.

Henry Franklin, a coal merchant, who walked with two sticks; said he went to Jones for treatment and was recommend; ed a vegetarian diet and olive oil. Junes told him that à spirit doctor came to him. He did not come out of the trance til all the patients had been examined. Superintendent Goddard: Did you be lieve this man went into a trauco ̈and communicated with a spirit doctor

Franklin: Yes; I still conscientiously believe it.

Miss May Jefferies, of Twyford,' said. she had a chest complaint Jones, in trance, placed a handkerchief over her chest and breathed through it. Miss) Jefferies added :

1 believe it all. I believe in Mr. Jones, the faith healer, and that bej could cure me, Ca

The case was dismissed.

Outside the court large crowd, mainly women, cheered and congratulat nd Jones as he left. The women kissed each other, and men, including soldiers, shook Jones's hand.

WHAT TYPISTS MUST KNOW. BRITISH CIVIL SERVICE TEST.

The county court judge who recently aade disparaging remarks about women: typists would probably knit his brows if he were confronted with one of the exa mitation papers for typists who seek to pass the portals of the Civil Service.

Before he started on the English paper he would be yamed that "Bad gram- mar, the incorrect use of words and phrases and serious errors in punctua tion will be rarily inshed" and then The would be invited to

Write a letter describing either a bazaar or a tennis tournament;

Discuss the advantages of having women AL.Ps., or

+1

Select a story read in book form and also seen on the films, and point out any changes made in the book when adapt ing it to the films. After this he would be given a log poem of the order that is popular with young reciters and be instructed to con- dense it into 10 words of prose, and, in addition, put a few of the poet's frenzied phrases (of which the following is in ex ample) into everyday English:

Twice and thrice" and yet again Flew the lifebout down the gale With the moonlight on her sail- With the sunrise on her, sail.",

SPELLING.

A long passage, of which the following is a specipien, would also have to be' written out in correct spelling:

"Prezentli bee found hiz iez rivítid upen a fais opozit too him. It woz that oy. wun or thi koristerz, a taul, dark, hansum feloe, hoo sang with 2 konsen- traishan..

To show his knowledge of arithmetic he would have to work out the following calculation:

"An empty rectangular tank measures; 1.5 metres by 80cm. by 75cm. It is to be filled with water from another tank of length 3.6 metres and breadth 25 metres. Find by bow many centimetres the level of the water in this tank will. have fallen when the empty one is full." All the foregoing is in addition, "to clean and accurate typing......

The ending of a letter is a diabolical form of deception.

Tours truly isa paradoxical formula, for it is ackbowirdged to be the least true of any form of dedication. It is cold and Supercilious, and is used by people who consider themselves anything but yours
