THE FIVE-STEP.

A NEW ALTERNATIVE TO THE

FOX TROT

There has appeared on the edge of the season a new date, the five-step, which has interesting possibilities. It is a lance with four steps, separate and distinct, which can be varied, as end fox-trot stapā: and, danced in 3/4 time, it hits a rhythn of its own. The dance time is the imple one of oce-two otc-two three-which is the basic time of the foxtrot as it was originally created by the Vernon Castles.

This new danes will not rival the ex trot or squeeze the waltz from it narrow foothold on the unse programmes of to- day. And this is because, there are at: present, two types of new dances, One type arms definely at replacing the fox- trot it sets ont be something simpler, more delightful, and more catchy than even the universally popular. fox-trok All the dance in this gory to date have failed atterly and completely. DANCING PUBLIC'S MOODS.

The Blues is such a dance, and the new Five-Step may become one too.. The most interesting possibility the latter dance appears to hold is, that of pasting the slow and cumbersome Blues; for the Blues, after a season's trial is wearing very thin and in many places is no longer played in the clubs and dance-restaur ants, where its played three or four times in the nightly nine-til-two pro- gramme. only 2 quarter or "fifth of the people prevent take the floer for it, At private danres it is scarcely ever played now; and at hunt and county hali nevor.

A couple dancing the new dance the other night told me that they had acquired it in one very short lesson, and attributed this to the fact that the general dance styl is very similar to that of the fox-trot. although, as I have noted, it has a dis tinctive rhythm. They danced it vasily, with a gliding motion and long steps. It is, one imagines, capable of development. as the original fox trot turned out to be: and when the world's dancingre champions, Miss Barbara Mies and Mr. Maxwell St. will no
