Mr. Oku returned on Thursday on, the hegaris from an extended book scout ing expedition in Europe, in which he succeeded in finding, fifty-nine Chinese the Hebrew manuscripts bound in original Chinese milk, which, with the exemption of fourt which were stolen several years, ago from an exhibition in Landon, con stitute all the manuscripts known to have been written by Jews living in China.

The tutuseripts, consist of hynnais and aser books and were brought from China to London by the London Society Sag Promoting Christianity among the Jews in China, an organization which seat missionaries to that country for the first time in Ye They were purchased- by the missintries of that society in the village of Kar-fang-fro,

The manuscripts" are various in that. instead of being in the form of scrolls.. they are in the shape of fans. The oblong pages are fuked one mam the other, and The reader polls the pages out fa-wise. Several books, consisting of hynna's and prayer books contain translations of bynins in the Jewish-Persian dialect, thereby indicating a relationship between the Chinese and Persian Hebrew rituals.

The money for the purchase of these "Was books." said Mr. Oko recently, made available by a group of Jests in the West headed by Ben Selling of Port- aisil, Ure, and Rabbi Jonah" "Wise," san of Irene M. Wise, are founder of the Hebrew Inion College, also of that eity. With the new acquisitions the Hebrew Union College library will now house -70,000 books, among which are the largest Spinoza and Hebrew musical collections in the world."*

4. JEWS IN POVERTY.

Agcompanying the mumseripts is a his tory of the experience of the missionaries of the village of Kar-fing-fan. The in- troduction shows how in the middle of the nineteenth emitury once powerful Jewish groups had sauk into poverty and whole entunities were in danger of dis integration. Persecution and starvation were the familiar lot of the remnants of the Ming Dynasty Jews at that perin. The writer of the historyzappens in teresting notes, how the manuscripts were acquired.

The introdution to the history reads, in part, as follows:

Since the British treaty of Nanking in 1942 nay Christians in Europe have directed their attention toward the Jewa in Chiun it was at their request that the writer of these infroductory, remarks undertook to direct the general plan and i managenivat-of the undertaking.

A friendly feeling was generally evine townrd our visitors, which is in no amali measure attributable to the Hebrew let ter of introduction from Shanghai, of which, although the Jews anderstood not the purport, they readily perceived its identity with their, own adred writings. Without such an introduction they would probably have been received with sus picion and distrusted as spies.

Our visitors learned that during the year 1840 the whole of the little Jewish conununity at Kac-fung-foo were thrown into great alarm and exposed to danger of persecution, on account of suspected connection with" foreigners, by a letter written in Chinese and dispatched some time before by the late Temple Layton, HB. 3. Corsi at Amoy, for the purpose of procuring Home Hebrew 3.8.S;

Here in the midst of a surrounding population, two-thirds of whom were pro- fessurs of Mohammedanism, and close adjoining to a heathen temple dedicated to the god of fire, n, few Jewish fami lies, sunk in the lowest poverty and des- titution, their religion scarcely more than a name, and yet sufficient to separate them from the maltitude around, exposed to trial, reproach and the pain of long- deferred hope, remained the unconscious depositaries of the ortles of God and survived as the solitary witnesses of dri parted glory Not a single individunt. could read the Hebrew books; they lizd been without a rabili for fifty years.

SYNAGOGUE IN RUINS.

"The expectation of a Messiah seems to have been entirely lost. The rite of circumcision, which appears to have been observed at the period of their discovery by the Jesuits two centuries ago, bad heen totally discontinued. The synago- gue itself was tottering in ruins some of the ground had been alienated to pagan rites, and a portion of the fallen materials. sold to the neighbouring heathen. Some time previously they had petitioned the Chinese Emperor to have pity on their poverty, and to rebuild their temple. No reply had been received from Peking. but to this feeble hope they still clung. Out of seventy family names or clans. only seven now remained, numbering About son individuals in all, dispersed over the neighbourhood. According to present appearances, in the judgment of our native messengers, after a few years all traces of Judaism will probably have. disappeared."

If you cratch a Socialist vou find an enlightened Tory-Mr. Ben Tille

There is something to be said for the paradox that in the next war the safest place for a man will be in the fighting Services-Sir Philip Sassoon.

The gift of rhetoric has been responsi ble for more bloodshed on this earth than All the guns and coniosives that were ever invented. Mr. Baldwin.

HOW TO GET GOOD SERVICE FROM

MICHELIN TYRES.

Keep tyres pumped up to correct pressure for the load they have to carry.

tell you what this should be,

We can

When tyres are under inflated there is continual internal friction between the foundation cord and the rubber, causing overheating of the tyre and consequent rapid deterioration.

Water can also enter causing rust, resulting eventually in the rims having sharp edges which cut the walls of the tyre near the bead.

"

Most cars in Hongkong run on under inflated tyres with the above disastrous 'results. Have wheels examined front and rear for trueness and tracking alignment. H

your

they are at fault in this respect the tread of the cover is subject to a grinding action which quickly destroys the cover.

اریم

Keep tyres free from oil and grease.

Start and stop gently and take corners slowly.

Lastly buy MICHELIN tyres from us and follow the above advice and

tyre satisfaction is assured.
