PLEA FOR ALLEVIATION OF

BRITISH DUTY.

Mr. Charles Watney, Hon. Secretary, China Tea Association in a letter to the Home Press, says prople sometimes think that the impert of China tea, is a relatively unimportant matter because the volume imported into this country from China is comparatively small. It is only 10,038,844 hs, which shows a very considerable drop from the amount of importations just before the war, when- they were practically 1,000,000 lbs. The China Tea Association has always laid stress on the fact that there no question of any proposal being made of serious import to Indian and China ten predues tion. Board of Trade figures show bow relatively unimportant it is. and the amount of duty collected is equally nog ligible. The entire importation duty from China, including Hongkong and Macao, only yield us, and the amount obtainable from the differential duty is $81.000. No doubt the removal of the duty might help the China ten trade a little, the more so as the commodity" is making headway, but no alleviation of the burden of the daty would ever make it a serious rival to the British Empiregrown article.
