THE STOWAGE OF CARGO,

An important judgment has been de livered in the House of Lords respecting stowage of cargo. The two lower Courts had maintained the principle that if two parcel of cargo were so stowed that one could injure the other during the course of the voyage the ship was unseaworthy. By a majority judgment the House of Lords held that the damage was caused not by unseaworthiness of the ship, for which the shipowners would have been able, but by improper stowage, for which, under the bill of lading, they were not responsible,"

A SALVAGE. CLAIM.

Mr. W H. Alexander, as owner, and the masters and crews of the steam' tugs Sun and Sua X, claimed salvage remune eration in respect of services rendered to the Japanse steamship Alpx Jaru, in ex- tinguishing a fire aboard in the River Thames on August 20th and 31st and Sep- tember 1st. 1023. The defendants admit- ted salvage services, and Mr. Justice Hill, in the Admiralty Division on March 13th, awarded £4,000 to the Sun & ant £2,000- to the Nan

Newcastle recently, The Automaton averaged 17:4 knots on the voyage down.
