*
[FROM THE TIMES KHARTLY CORRESPONDENT]
The following article describes the pro- gress of the great irrigation scheme for cotton-groving purposes in, the Sudan, which was the anbject of debate' in tha House of Commons last month. A section of the Labour Party opposed, the Trade Facilities Bill giving guarantees amount ing to £13,500,000 to the Sudan Planta tion Syndicate, which is carrying out the construction of the field canals and the preparation of the land for swing, the Bill pust its second reading by a large majority..

The completion of the Sidan Gezira Irrigation Scheme will not only be a mile stone in Great Britain's Imperial policy, but it is coufleatly expected that it will inaugurate a period of commercial pro- sperity in a country where many British lives have been lald down for the nd-; vance of civilization.

itis anticipated that a total area of 1,000,000 acres will eventually be placed under irrigation and made available for cultivation.
This subsequent enlargement of the scheme has not been lost sight of in de- signing the dam and 'the head regulator of the main canal, which will be cap able of meeting the requirements when the time becomes ripe. The storage reser. roir formed by the dam extends prac tically to Singo, a distance of 58 miles upstream, and will be capable of im pounding some 68 million cubic metres of water (2,998,000,000 cubic feet), which will be sufficient far effective irrigation of the larger area.

COST OF SCHEME.
The cost of the present scheme is being net by loans raised in England under Government guarantee, in 1913-14, 1919, and 1990, amounting to a total of £13,500,000. The scheme comprises a dam at Makwar, a main canal 62 miles in length, the first as miles of which

is suggested that the Jos BOBERTS Sextor referred to in the said Onler was one Joux ROBERTS who died on the 10th July, 1866, at Devonport and lived at one time at Singapore and Hongkong and afterwards at Kingsand near Plymouth, at Liverpool and Devonport and who had a daughter a Mrs. bautow
The total excavations the minor and subsidiary canals and field channels alone (without the main canal) amount to nearly eight times the volume of the Great Pyramid at Gizch. What will per-NoreIt haps, give a better idea of the enormous quantity of digging involved is the fact that if the excavated soil were made into bricks they would suffice for the construc tion of a wall, 5ft. high and 1ft thick, entirely round the earth at the Equator. The larger canals are being dug by Ame- ricar. Bucyrus excavators, working on the drag-line principle, and these bage machines are working day and night ta complete the work within the contract time."
The construction of the field canals and the actual preparation of the land for Howing are being undertaken by the Sudan Plantations Syndicate, a company that has already had considerable exper ence of cotton cultivation in this area; while the major construction work has been entrusted to the firm of Messrs. S. Pearson & Son, who have undertaken to have the works in a sufficiently advanced state to permit of a cotton crop being raised in 1925. It is proposed by the Syndicate to divide the 300,000 acres inta 20 stations of about: 15,000 acres, each block being managed by a chief inspector. The Syndicate will also control the culti vation and erect the necessary ginning factories.ne

of granite quarried in the neighbouring
hills of Segadi, and is founded on a dyke of crystalline rock that outcrops in the river at this point,
It is estimated that over 15,108.000 cubic feet of masonry and 100,000 tons of. Portland cement will be employed in the construction of the dam. Its length is nearly two miles, and its maximum heigh nearly bolt, There wil be 80 main sluices, 271t. high and 3ft wide; 14 canal regu lator stuces, 17ft. high and just over 20ft. wide; and 19 spillways. Approximately 3,300 tons of ironwork will be used in the sluice gates and operating machinery, which is being supplied by Messrs. Ban soms and Espior, of Ipswich.
Cement is being manufactured on the site from materials which exist in abund- anco in the vicinity. The up-to-date cement factory, equipped with continuous kilne drit tube-grinding mills, is capable of an output of 100 tons & day of cement complying with the British standard specification.
A small island, formed by an outerop of rock in the river, has been of very material asmstance in the execution of the dan construction; for it facilitated the diversion of the stream necessary for laying the foundations of the dam in the river: The four datious in the west channel have already been laid, and the stream diverted over them. The north and south axtremities of the island have been connected to the east bank by means of temporary dams of earth and sheet piling, and the permanent dam has com menced to rise from its bed in the main channel. Those portions of the structure which are founded on dry land are already well in hand, that on the west. bank being practically completed.
