From first to last it was a case of countering hustle by bustle, and, as both packs were liberally endowed with | muscle, the strenuous struggle for supre- macy provided many lively exchanges and obstinate serumming.

The game was yet young when it be came apparent that the Irishmen were determined to allow the Scottish back='no scope for indulging in a display of what I might be described as "brighter" Rugby,

bottled up that fries seemed retuote impossibilities. And yet during this period, before the one side had tried to exploit the weaknesses of the other, and when the green jerseys were hovering en the Scottish line, Scotland contrived), to get what proved to be a winning lead of 10 points Ireland had had nearly all the game. both territorially and from the point of view of initiative: Scotland had had but two chances, and in between a very bad quarter of an hour, when they were in dire straits with Ireland threaten." ing to overrun them, Opportunism gave the home country a"lead which on play up to that point was hardly deserved.

Shortly afterwards the Irishmen had their reward, the Scottish defence being rather at sea. From that point almost tq the end it was anybody's game, with the odds always slightly against Ireland. There was a brief period during the second half, when, with Ireland facing the breeze, the outlook for Scotland was none too bright. Only two paints separated the teams, and Ireland were having rather the better of the argument, both in front and behind. Anxious nuЯments passed. The brilliant spoiling tactics pi their opponents took all the sting out of the Scottish attack. It was a grua Right. Hard knocks were given and inken, tem- pers were inclined to get a little ruffled, and stoppages for minor sccidents were frequent. "Now it was the turn of the Irishmen to carry play to the Scottish line mighty oustanghts which always spelled danger. Now it was the Seuttish forwards who swept down to the Irish goal with the ball at their feet. Bush followed rush, dash followed dash. Yet there was little to show for these great strivings until another snatched try came Scotland's way, and after that there was tot much doubt that seotland would carry the day.

In the third round of the Scottish Cup there were two sensations, the defeat at hoine of Batgers and Raith Rovers by Hiberulan and St. Bernard respectively. The ill-fate that has attended Rangers, in their quest for the. Scottish Cup is proverbial, ht, nutwithstanding all their past fullures, there was a preponderanes of opinion that this season they would succeed in capturing the prize that has so long eluded them. Conditions were well- nigll perfect, each side was gimilarly affected by the absence through injury of their regular centre-forward, and yet Hibernian wan fairly and aquarely, Rangers' reputedly incomparable for- wards, supported by wing half-backs of supremo skill, were beaton by the ordi- uary defence of a clubs that occupies a comparatively modest position in the League. The other unturn was the de- feat of Raith Rovers by & Second Leagne club, St. Bernard's of Edinburgh-the feat revives mineries of past triumphs of this once famous club, "who, won the Scottish Cup so far back, so 1805.
