PROPOSED REFORM OF
"CALENDAR.
INDIAN VIEWS INVITED..
The Advisery and Technical Committee for Communications and Transit of the League of Nations has been recently con- sidering the question of the reform of the Calendar. They have hecu in communica tion with the Holy See, his Holiness the Oecumenical Patriarch, and his Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury, and as a re- ault they have made the following de clarations: (a) that from the point of view of dogma strictly speaking, the idea of the reform of the calendar with regard to the fixing of Easter, and the more general question, of the reform of the Gregorian calendar, does not meet with difficulties of such a nature that they can be regarded beforehand as insuperable (h) that no reforms of the enlendar, and particularly to decision regarding the fix- ing of Easter (a question which is essen-, tially a religious one), is practicable. without an agreement between the vari ous high religious authorities concerned, and (c) that the changes in existing con- ditions involved by any reform are only justified and acceptable if definitely de- inanded by public opinion, with a view to an improvement of public life and economic relations. The examination of the question is to be continued by, a This special Committee of Enquiry. Committee will take as a starting point the scheme, prepared by the Committee, of the International Astronomical Union at a meeting in Rouse in 1922, and the recommendations rande by the Interna- tional Chamber of Commerce in June 1021,
The League of Nations has invited remarks and suggestions from over- ments and from the religious authorities concerned and the Government of India". bave been consulted by the India Otee. The papers came recently to the Chan her through the Government of Bengal, Lut the Committee did not remark upon the subject. They understood that, one of the objects in view was to remedy the great inconvenience caused in economic life and more especially in the transport trade by the use of the present calendar." They are hot, however, ne- quainted with these inconveniences, and they could not, therefore, offer any use- ful suggestions!
The Committee of the International Astronomical Union which is mentioned above summarised its final results in tho three following fundamental points: (a) the adoption of a perpetual calendar, keeping 52 weeks plus one or two blank days; (b) January 1st to take the place of the day at present occupied by Decen ber 22nd, and (e) the 364 days to be divid ed into four periods of 91 days ench, ie, two months of 30 days, and one of 31,
In connection with the Royal Packet Nav. Co.'s (K.P.M.) services without excluding an auxiliary division
to all destinations in the Netherlands East Indies.
