THE LOG OF THE "CUTTY SARK."
HISTORIC FEATS AND QUAINT
· FACTS.
The Cutty Sark, famous the world o'er for her sailing feats as a tea and wool clipper, is now lying at Falmouth, the cynosure of many admiring eyes, being rigged according to her original | sail and spar plan. This fact lends ad- ditional interest to the publication of The Log of the Butty Sark," by the well-known authent author Mr. Bal Lubbock (James Brown & Son, Glasgow). | Mr. Lubbock has written so much of the old clippers, and brought to hear on his subject so much exporisnes and research, that he can be accepted as a recognizel authority. In the compilation of this book he has had access not only to her log-books, but also the captain's abstracts, and the advantage of information received from those who served in her and on board her Inmed rivals.
BEAT P. & G. MAIL STEAMER..
One of the records of the Cutty Sark was beating the new P. & O, mail staimer Britannia in 1840. Capt. Wolget, the skipper, in his log, related:
1.
We were rounding Gabo Island to rignal, when the P. & Britannia came inside of us, but we heat her into Sydney. The Cutty Sark ran from Cape Otway in 10 hours, or at the rate! of 14 knots per hour.
Britannia, it has to be remembered, was, cock of the walk from London to Sydney. She was beaten in a strong southerly breeze; and Cutty Sark was
theu under mizzen lap-mils, the sail on! the main including royal, except the main-1 shil, which was furled, and all sail on the fore except the rayal." Britannia way at the time straming 13 knots, and Cutty Sark's land bearings showed her "to be making something in the region of 17 knots per hour."
Curiously sough, in the following year the Cutty Sark also beat the mait boat in the run from Cape Otway to Sydaey Heads, which she made in the day 22 hours or on an average of "14 knots. Even in 1991, of her last voyage under the Red Ensign. 1 fnd an example of the Cufty Sark out running a steamier.
The Cutty Sark made some magnificent pusages up and down tim Channel, once taking only 24 hours from Stert. Point to the anchorage off Southend Pier, gand, when 23 years old, she was so staunch that on some voyages the pumps never wanted to be used, and the cargo would ecme up without a stain upon the bales.
HOW SHE GOT NAM The Cutty Sark's present figurehead is always being photographed at Falmouth, bus it is os her original care. Her name is taken from Burns's Tam o' Shanter."
Whene'er to drink you are inclined, De Putty Nork's run in your mind- Think, you may buy the joys ower dear! Remember Tam o' Shanter's mare.
