Mr. M. K. L. appearing for the de fendant, said that the ease could be dis- posed of at 'onee, He did not think there was any disagreement as to the facts, but he desired to point out that in the Rents Ordinance it was stated that after the plans had been passed a certificate was to be issued, which meant that the building had to be pulled down within 3 months, but the tenant could not be given notice to quit until the owner had re- ceived this certificate. In the Public Health and Buildings Ordinance it was stated that if the work had been begun within three months they were entitled to give notice of this to the P.W.D. ön the form in schedule K. This form entitled the applicant to extend tenacy for a period of seven days more.

The Magistrate said he would let the defondant off as lightly as he could and ordered him to be sent to gaol for seven days.

The Canton Gazette of yesterday says: Governor Yang has sent a deputy to Heungshan district to attend the final trial of more than thirty pirates, who were captured by the gunboat Pak Tau near Chinshan, and bas, given, orders to the deputy that if sufficient proof to con- vict these prisoners is found, they are to he immediately executed.

These pirates, it is reported, committed many previous piracies. Several are women, the wives of pirates. After the capture by the gunboat, they were sent to the Heungshan district gap by the commander of the gunboat and a pre linsinary trial took place before the dia triet magistrate of Heungshan.
