HONGKONG CHINESE MERCHANT'S PETITION.

At the U.S. Court, Shanghai, last week, the Official Retezee (Mr. N. E. Lurton) heard a petition by a Hongkong mer- chant, C. Lai Hing, for restitution of various sums advanced to Reid's, Ltd., Inc. (in bankruptcy) to buy stock. Peti tioner alleged that in July, 1921, he was asked to buy stock in Reid's, Ltd.. Ine, and agreed to purchase Tis. 100,000 worth of stock as soon as permission could be obtained by the firm in question to increase its stock. As a guarantee of good faith the petitioner advanced on August 22nd, 1921, the sum of H. $3,000 to Reid's, Ltd., which was, without the knowledge of the petitioner but with the knowledge of the Mercantile Bank of India as to the nature and char- acter of such fund deposited in said bank against the overdraft of Reid's, Ltd., Inc. Later IL 30,000 and II. $5,000 were also advanced. The petitioner re- ceived acknowledgments stating the pur pose of such payments and stating that
