SERIOUS, DAMAGE TO JAPANESE VESSE

The Viako Maru, a Japanese freighter of 2,758 tons, arrived at Singapore on the 14th inst. in a seriously damaged condi- tion. It appears that while on her way. from Selat Panjang, Sumatra, with a cargo of timber and coal, the Miato Maru ras on to a shoal in the Rhio Straits (lat. 1.06, ing. 203.15) at 6.30 p.m. on the 13th, Serious damage was sustained to the fore- foot of the vessel, and very considerable water-entered the hull. When the foko Marn arrived at Singapore she was twelve feet down by the head It was, therefore, fortunate that the bulkheads in the dam agid part of the ship held. The fiako 3far is a new ship owned by a company which, it is understood, has been recently formed in Japan. It is probable that the damage will have to be repaired in dry dock at Singapore.Straits Times,
