LABOUR GOVERNMENT'S ACCESSION THE DIRECTORY

PUBLIC OPINION FAVOURS GIVING 'THEM A SPORTING CHANGE.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Lospos January 24th.

LABOUR COMES INTO THE KINGDOM

The present week is one that will he long remembered. It has seen the advent. of the first Labour Government in this.. country to high offee, and that, of course, is a matter of historic importance which can never be ignored. I have tried to make it clear in previous articles that so far as the average Englishman is concern- ed, and leaving out of account certain scusational sections of the Press, there is no great fear of the consequences of Labour Government. A very old saying.

Mr. Hamsay. MacDonald has certainly begun woll by publishing words that may be expected to find a response in the hearts of his countrymen. As' to his own position, he has said: "It is not a moment for elation; it is a terrible re-

THE DIRECTORY sovor the notable appasibility. We shall have to do our events, ports and nition of the Far East, from best to face it. Fail or aucceed. I can Natherands India to Siberia, in which only say this: that no Government respon-Europeana roside. sible for the affairs of this country will more honestly try.' This is the right spirit. If the Labour Government dis- charges the duties of office with the sense of responsibility indicated in this short pronouncement of the new Prime Minister all should be well.

EXIT MR. BALDWIN.

The Book is printed from New Type specially reserved for the purpose, and uniformity

Tory arrangement greatly facilitates refereãos.

Not only is the Directory as fall and complete in each case as it can be made, but each Colony. Port or Settlement is prefaced by DESCRIP TION, carefully revised each year, most, of which will serve as an accurată GumDE JOS TER Torast, giving every detail in connection with the places, their History, Topography, sto.

The Information in these Descriptions, consist The fall of the Baldwin Governmenting of a hundred interesting artician, packed proceeded according to plan. It was all with facts concisely set out, and containing arranged beforehand how it was to be statistice of the TRADE of each Coantry and done a vote of no confidence moved inport, would alons suffice to fill a large volume, the House of Commons as soon as Parlia mcat met, by Mr. MacDonald's party, and supported by the Liberals. There was nothing left for the Conservatives on the vote being carried, but to get out of the way. What a humiliation for a great party that up till the mad plunge towards Protection was secure in powers with every hope of remaining at the head of affnies for another three or four years!; No wonder Mr. Baldwin has to put up with a certain amount of ridicule for his insensate folly. In all the circumstances it is not surprising that Mr..Asquith and the Liberals under his banner turned deaf cur to the urgent pleas addressed to them from several quarters to join forces with the Conservatives and form a kind of Coalition against Labour. M. Baldaay name can be found inrinatly. win has not only discredited himself as a statesman, but his party has also hnd to suffer from lack of confidence due to political insincerity, because they were not averse to gambling with the economic position of the country, as pawn in the Party game.

The only touch of comic relief in this tragedy of the downfall of a great party is provided by the late Northcliffe (now Rothermere) "Preas. For weeks these organs of light and leading have abjured Mr. Asquith to take office after first making friends with the Conservatives. He was to he Prime Minister in order to keep Labour out. He was hailed as the only individual who could save this coun- try from Socialism and its alleged bor. rors Ile was a heaven sent statesman,. a true natriut, etc. It has been really funny reading every morning, bearing in mind that these snune guides, philosophers and friends have for years, until now. Assailed Mr. Asquith with every form of invective, and it was mainly owing to them that he was brought down when Premier in 1016.

AN ATMOSPHERE OF GOOD-WILL.

It has to be noted as a matter of strict fairness that the Labour Government take up the responsibilities of office with the good will of every fair-minded man and woman. To the true English way, which is so characteristic, there is the desire to give Ramsay MacDonald and Co. a sporting chance to make good in the wide field of legislation at home and diplomacy abroad. Even the Rothermere Press an nounced as soon as the names of the new Ministry appeared that he would have fair play. Now that he is in ice." any's the Daily Mail, faced with grave and difficult problems, we recogne that, he stands before the world us the Pepre sentative of Great Britain, and he may be assured that we shall always enden- your to place the best construction upon his words and acts."

This is all to the good. The attitude of other former critics of the stern and unbending order is much the same and it is apparent that if Mr. MacDoud fails in his task of navigating the, ship of) State and controlling the extreme mixe ed assortment of Labourites that coipoje his crew-a task nobody living need envy himit will not be for want of fairness 'all round."

THE RAILWAY STRIKL

There is cruel irony in the fact that in the very week which sees a Labour Gov- erament Resuming the responsibilities of office we have a national strike of railway workers. The first business, therefore, of Labour seaced in high places is to, find a means of settling a quarrel that ought never to have reached the dimensions of a strike. How will Labour is a Govern ment set about it! This is the question of the hour at the date of writing.

As the cabies have informed you, the origin of the railway trouble has been the findings of the Wages Board on the mat ter of wagea relating to engine-drivers and fromen. The Board issued certain awards which the men refused to accept. In this refusal their Union struck a shrewd blow at the sanctity of agreements in regard to industrial disputes. The men's representatives set their hands to document accepting the authority of the Board; but as soon as it was discover- ed that some of the engine-drivers and Bremen-the men employed on express (Continued on page 9.)
