le is an interesting lagt, conforming, perhaps, to the psychology of our race, that while an English audience will" wel come with restany a foreign dancer in. our midst, it is England that leads the dave- ing world, and sets the standard for the foxtrot, the tango, or the one-step, says the Daily Telegraph of February 7th That paper continues:-This rather startling disclosure--for it is a disclo sure to most people, whether they dance. or not-was made by Mons. Camille de Rhymal yesterday in the course of a talk on the World's Dancing Championship. which takes place on March 3rd and 4th at the Queen's Hall, and for which Theo Daily Telegraph is, as in former years, offering the two Championship Caps, one for the gentleman and the other for his partner, amateurs er professionals. There are group championships for amateur couples. r., an amateur dancing with a professional, but it is the world's championship that will bring to London. for these two nights the most, accom- plished dancers, not only of this country." but of France, Belgium, Denmark, Hun- gary, Holland, and other European countries. The preliminary heats have already been commenced in London, not ably at the Elysée Restaurant, Coventry Street, and between now and the end of the month there will be many other selective dances, in the London suburbs, at Cricketham, Kew. Bayswater, and Streatham. etc., as well as in the pro vinces, the list for next week indinding heats at Manchester, Carabridgo, Read- ing, and Brighton.

Similar keenness is being displayed on the Continent, for The Daily Telegraph Cups are a much-coveted prize, and Mons. de Rhycal, who is one of the or ganisers of the thampionship, has re- cently been to Holland. at the request of the Dutch teachers, to explain to them the high standard that will be required. either in the waltz. fox-trot, one-step, or tango. The "blue" will occupy an im- portant position in the competitions, and it is hoped that as a result of the cham- pionship same iniform standard will bo evolved. in much the same way that the context did so well last year in setting a standard for the tango. At present the blues is passing through its "shaking" period in London, but its Founder and it was bons. de Rhypal whb copyrighted the name declares that it must be performed more smoothly than it is now either in Paris ar New York, Actually the blues is a modification of the "camel walk. All the most re cent dances seem to have passed through this transition period of "jerking and bumping," arriving finally at the "grace. fully gliding stage, which is really a "merry sort of walk, and turning in time with the music." Danced in this way the one-step or the fox-trot is not ex hausting, but a charming" pastime more suited to those who have passed their first youth than ever the scottische or waltz was.
In Germany and Central Europe gene- rally it seems that they are still perform ing the fox-trot in the primitive style in which it was brought to Europe in 1914- 15. Such dancing is no longer tolerated here. but in Berlin and Vienna they still dance in the old fashion, their own ex planatiot being that during the war there was a wall rafsed round them, which pre- Vented them from realising bow much the style of dancing had been altered..
.There is now a widespread desire on the Continent to ndaps the English style. and whether in Germany, ia Switzerland, or even in Paris, if an exhibition of hall- room dancing is required, it is an English couple who are sought for, because of their refinement and native deportment.
