SCOTTISH SOCIALISTS.
TAKE FROM WEALTHY.”
There was a wild outburst, resulting in the forcible ejection of a Communist, at the annual conference at Edinburgh, ou January 5th, of the Scottish Division of the Independent Labour party. The pre dominant note of the conference was one of confidence in the future, based on the ancresses of the mediate past. Mr. W H. Martin, M.P. for Dunbartonshire, prysided, and several other Scottish mem bets of Parliament were present among the 120 odd, delegates.
Mr. James Maxton, M.P., made a char." Lacteristic contribution to the debates. It
was during a discussion on old age pen-. sions and a deinand for the abolition of the means qualification, the reduction of the age from 70 to 60, and the increase of the pension from 10 to £1. Where is the money to come from? one naturally asks, as one asks about all the drastic reforms which Labour may introduce. Mr. Maxton has no diffenlty on that particular score. He made a remarkable Acure as he sing there, his long black hair falling over his sunken cheeks, re- minding the conference that the first thing a Labour Government End to do was to take from the rich and give to the poor the opportunity of living. That, he said. is our central proposition. The Labour party must take froin "the wealthy people in this country money which is available to satisfy this very moderate and reasonable demand for the ages people in our land."
In the morning the chairman reviewed the results of the election, and in a con- fident note pointed out that if Scotland hul Home Rule the Red Flag of Socialism would be flying over the parliament house.
