The weather for the off-day at the -THE TYTAM HANDICAP. rates on Saturday was a vast improve-"B" Class. ment on that of the three previous days. Lady Severn's Langsat, 160 lbs. During the night the course had dried Mr. Humphreys' Pet Mouse, 152 lbs. considerably and the riding, was nearly so heavy. There was very little sun and a cold snap set in during the day. The attendance was larger than on any of the principal days of the meeting though the racing was for the most part confined to ponies that had no won on the three previous days. The prin- cipal exception to this generalisation was the race for the Professional Cup and Subscription Griffins Champions." This race drew a small field of four poules; of which Mr. Dynasty's King Canute and Mr. Topside's Mountain Hawk wore favourites, whilst Lady Severa's pouy, Durian, was considered a good outside chance. After Mountain Hawk had led the field for the greater part of the way round Durian came through in the home straight to win a good race from King Canute, who holly challenged Durian from the distance post and in. Durian's win was a popular one as it constituted Lady Severn's fourth win of the day, Mr. her ponies Gibson having ridden, four
to victory.
The racing on the whole was very open and backers found it difficult to spot winners; consequently some surprise dividends were returned, the best being paid on Rivergrass (Mr. Davies up) in the Hongkong Eandioap. ("A" Class) who beat a field of ten ponies in a gallop once round. Benz, of Messrs. Stephen and Stitt's stable, who on Thursday won the Eve furlong race for the Governor's Cup, turned out for this race. He was a hot favourite but did not get a place.
