PROHIBITION "COMEDY.

PUBLICAN, AND HIS POLITICAL FRIENDS. The most exultant rana in the United States to-day, wrote a New York or respondent recently, is Mr. Phillip Gross man. a public-house keeper and politician of Chicago, who has just verived from President Coolidge a pardon which ter minuates a gaof sentence that he has never served.

Nine months ago Grossman was given

a year's imprisonment for violating the Prohibition Laws. According to the New Fork World he continued his business without interruption. Convicts in the gaol that he never entered regularly for- warded him his correspondence.

This comfortable arrangement "was rendered possible by influential friends of the popular publican Last summer they made a pilgrimage to Washington and presented to Mr. Harding a powerful plea for his release. Mr. Harding refused. But at Christmas time Growman's friends made a fresh pilgrimage, this timo to Mr. Coolidge, whose heart they moved by depicting the "prisoner" as a gen. tleman guilty of an error which he re pented deeply, and for which he had paid a heavy, price in mental anguish and loes of business,

Mr. Coolidge yielded to their importu- alties, and Croman's pardon, which was sent to the gaol, is now in the hands of Gromman himself.

The World states that Grossman, by thus demonstrating his superiority to the laws, has greatly enhanced his political influence in Chicago.
