It will that it was extremely difficult to give be recalled that the first Jewel pooy anything like a correct forecast so far pony owned by Sir Paul was Jewel Astor ahend as six or seven days. If he had Dahlia which on the Derby for him in at his disposal information as to the con- 1914 with Mr. J: E. Brand in the saddle, "ditions prevailing in the upper air over Mr. Brand is riding again in Hongkong a number of stations and the weather after several years of absence. This year conditions prevailing over Central and he is riding for Messrs. Stephen and Stitt, Muskateer, belonging to Mr. A. A. South-West China he might be able to give some idea as to the weather for Alves, a Dervy suh. has done some very Wednesday and the following days. Fle, consistent training times and is not to however, very kindly went to the troubice despised in the race for the blue rib of looking up records as to the state of bou of the meeting. He does the distance the weather in Hongkong for the period in good time but without the steering 20th to gard (inclusive of both dates) over hand of somebody who knows the Course a stretch of a decade.. These records it is feared that the pony will not be seen show plenty of rain for this period from at his hest. Gymp, belonging to Mr. 1910 to 1921. there being only one sunny Bugram, has not done well over the Derby distance but should be dangerous over period, which was 1921. From 2014 to 1918 (ve years) there was plenty of sun-slightly shorter distances, like the Maiden shine in each year. Taking the ten years altogether six of the periods in question have been fine and four wet, but as these four have occurred frem 1019 onwards, it seems rather a debatule point as to whether this should lead one to forecast raia or fine weather for next week. So we leave it to readers to draw their own conclusions.

THE RACING."- The 1021 Hongkong race meeting will he noteworthy for more reasons than can be adequately mentioned. This year there are a larger number of stables as well as ponies, in particular of subscrip-

tion grifios competing, whilst the interest take in the annual event seems to be keener than ever. This appears to be burne out by the large demand for sweep stako tickets, and in this direction' it is interesting to note that the jockey Club first prize cash sweep for the Champions ovcat will probably amount to something like $70,000. Last year this amounted to

929,214.

As to the ponies the subscription grif fins this year have turned out to be in finitely better ponies as a class than we have been accustomed to for many years past, and they will provide some very good racing. Then, again, in the matter

and the Trial Plate on the first day. Dark Mouse belonging to Mr. Henry Hum. phrey's is a much fancied pony for the Derby, and he will have Mr. Kaoll in the saddle. Baronsfield (:1 hards), of Messrs, Morris and Marshall's stable, the biggest of a string of four, has gone off and is not looked upon as a likely winner, but Courtfeld (13.1 hands), his stable come panion, will probally render a good account of himself.

Bercachie was Messrs. Stephen and Stitt's hest Derby griffin. but he is hardly likely to be up to the standard of Derhy form by next week

"

Looking back over a period of 11 years we find from the Hongkong Race records that Sir Paul Chater has won the Derby on no fewer than five occasions. Ife won in 1912, 1911, 1915, 1916 and 1923. During the same period be gained 3 seconds and 5 thirds in the Derby. He has also won the Champions twice in the same period. The late ir Ellis Kadoorie also had the proud distinction of winning the Derby oo two occasions, Mr. John Peel once, Mr. G: H. Potts twice, and Mr. Birkett once.

OLD PONIES.

A BRILLIANT FUNCTION.

The last of the important Balls of the season--that of the Institution of Engi- neers and Shipbuilders of Hongkong took place at the City Hall last evening Both inside and out, the building was specially decorated for the occasion. In addition to the main entrance leading to the grand staircase, there were separate entrances for ladies and gentlemen, all lined with palms and ferns. Above the main portico of the Fail was displayed the Institution's badge-a phenix rising out of blazing ashes, with the word 'bique, brilliantly lit, below-and in the main dancing hall the crest is also shewn. The dancing saloons, card rooms, suppor room, etc., were all tastefully, decorated with Hags, bunting and plants, and for their activities in this connection Messrs. D. L. Keith and W. Greig are to be specially congratulated. Models of en gineering feats (a Hongkong Tramway Company's car and the s. Charlotte Dundas, the first practical steam vessel ever built, which was constructed in Scot- land in 1901) were staged on the midway landing of the main staircase.
