WAR'S SACRIFICES-

MR. BALDWIN ON FIVE YEARS OF

DISENCHANTMENT.

Mr. Baldwin, recently unveiled no the offices of the Board of Trade a memorial- to the 305 officials of the Department who, fell in the war. He said:

The unborn generations-la söme ways are happier than we, for to them will be revealed in its true perspective the magnitude and the issues of the war, and from them will be hidden soto of the controversies, the sordid; things, the selfishness, and the greed which rose among the good deeds Fe poisonous fung.

"It is no use our asking that que tion which has so often come to the lips of disconsolate men and women. Were these lives sacrified in vain ? To many of us the last five years have been years of disenchantment, and yet every cloud has a silver lining, and we can take strength from this fact that through all the difficulties of the time the strength and the moderation of the character of our people has once ughin shown itself.

It is only by the common and united efforts of men and women that we can maintain our civilisation at the level to which it has been raised, ntd it is only by superhuman effort that we can

·better it.

The memorial consists of a bronze tablet mounted in an eak frame. Tha funds subscribed for it were originally deposted with Sir Charles R. McGregor, Bart., and Company, who suspended pay- ment. This involved a heavy loss, bus the staff repeated their subscriptions.

As Patron of the British Legion, I want to send to all ex-Service men my very best wishes for 1924. I know that words produce nothing to help those who are, in distress through no fault of their own, and I realise that unfortunately there are thousands of such in this country to-day. I can only express ta them my sympathy and my most rarnest hops that timer will improvo, and that hefore the next New Year's number is issued the Legion may be relieved of ita
