SKY-SCRAPERS, AND EARTHQUAKES.

British architects and builders ara taking an interest in reports which have reached here about the schemes under consideration for the reconstruction of Tokyo. That is natural enough on the part of men professionally keen, who realise the possibilities when it is a caso of re-building a city. In this connection much attention bas heen aroused by in article recently published in the Observer iu, which Mr. A. C. Bessom, the distin- guished architect, argues that the sky scraper is probably the best design archi tecturally to resist earthquakes.

Now, if there is one type of building that the ordinary man would considez unsuitable for an earthquake region it is the sky-scraper; but Mr. Bessom chtins that it most suitable because it repre sents an arrangement of architectural stresses which, if a strain has to be taken, takes it successfully from its deep sub- terranean foundations of steel and con- crete. The steel girders which run up from the base are like the masts of a ship. The walls of the sky-scraper do not support, simply clinging to their steel masts, and if the masts move slightly the walls move with them instead of collaps ing.

Te is curiously interesting to read that eveu in New York, the city of sky

But the question is whether a ale in New York, represents a shock as violent as an earthquake in Tokyo, Prob- ably it does not: fur the theory is that being sunk very deep in a wide base of concrete, the sky-scraper would ride over the tremor in the earth's crust in much the same way that a ship rides over the

waves.

BATTALIONS OF BUYERS.

At Waterloo it is thought that the in- novation will prove particularly valuable, The great terminous stands in a district which is not the most law-abiding, to pus it mildly, in London; and it is consider. ed likely that, apart from country visi tors froin the South and West who may want to deposit their spare cash in sale keeping at the first opportunity after arriving in London Town, the vast num ber of Americans who reach London from Southampton in Waterloo, and return the same way, may desire banking facili ties at the station. It is probable that ordinary banking hours will not he oli served at the now Waterloo Bank, but that the convenience of travellers will be the first consideration. ras "BEGGAR'S OPERA" SUCCESSOR.

It looks as if the Lyric Theatre at the "Beggar's Hammersmith, where Opera" has had a run of three-and-a- half years of unbroken success, as men tioned in a recent Letter, is to find itself: in the happy position of possessing its own garrison of faithful and loyal sup- porters A few nights ago the curtain Windsor amid scenes of extraordinary, was ruig up on The Merry Wives of enthusiasm. A friend, who was at the opening of the play asaures me that the applause was almost hysterical at times. of course, it is early days for the Shake whether the Lyric crowd will show the sperian play, and it remains to be seen touching devotion to the Seventeenth Century farce that it displayed in the case of the Eighteenth Century comedy. tered at Hammersmith have been making some West End theatre managers think furiously. It is evident that the public will patronise for an indefinite period a play which has real meris judged by true standards of dramatic art, and thus we have had "The Beggar's Opera" making fortune for the lucky producers. and delighting the theatre-going public, while many of the hug and fashionable West Fad houses have been losing money every night. The revue bas lost its power to charm. It was good enough, perhaps, during the war, when the last thing people wanted to do was to think and all they craved for was amusement, how- ever hanal Now, a change has come over the scene, and theatrical managers are frantically anxious to discover new plays of real merit-H.B.

Myrinds of people have thronged the London shopping centres this Christinas. and, despite the universal complaint of shortness of money, there has been nu sign of poverty either in the appearance of the crowds or the freedom with which purchases have been made. The general impression given is that we have got back again to the pre-war atmosphere of the festive season to a degree not before attained since the close of hostilities' in 1918.

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS.

One of the most notable developments of recent years is the habit that people bave formed of rushing away from home at Christmas. The tendency to do this is increasing every year. I see that, according to railway returns of trafie, many hundreds of people left England by, ontgoing trains from London bound for the Continent, Switzerland and the South of France being the most popular places with the Christinas excursionista. The trains were so erowded some days that it was impossible for anyone who had omitted to book in advance to phtain a seat for love or money.

Paris was the Mecca of many holiday- makers; and there were considerable bookings for Holland, and also for Rome and the Italian Lakes. The prices be termed charged were what moderate, all things considered-z"week at Lugano, for instance, at sixteen

Perhaps it is not surprising that, offered quch facilities, those with the time to spare and the money to spend are glad to escape for a week or two Irom the rigour of the English climate in Decem- ber. the spending of Christmas-tide. Until a HONGKONG "CICAR STORE, LTD. few years ago nobody ever thought of going right away, for the holiday. It is -fashioned a change, indeed, from the old- Christmas of which Charles Dickens wrotë with enthusiasm and charm the family party with relatives and frienda, round the festive board on Christmas Day, the circle by the cheerful fire with its blazing logs, the spirit of jellity and fun, and good cheer.

Nowadays people seem to depend more on others for their amusement and less on their own resources.. From inquiries I have made' I learn that hotels and boarding-housei at seaside resorts are all- full of visitors for Christmas, who are attracted apparently by the programmes of concerts and dances and other diver sions.
