MN. MACKINTOSH REPLIES. "NOT REALUE QUITE SO„LUDIOROUS AFTER ALL,"

ST ANDREW'S CHURCH. ANNUAL MEETING.

THE QUESTION OF PEW RENTS.

-

The most important question 'discussed at the annual meeting of St. Andrew's Church, held last evening, was whether pew rents should continue or be abolished: Discussion of the question was thrown open to the large body of Church mem- bers present and several took advantage

Mr. N. Teesdale Mackintosh, Registrar at the Hongkong University and amem- ber of the Board of Education, distri- buted the prizes at the Wab.Yan English School yesterday afternoon and took the opportunity of replying at some length of the opportunity to express their to recent criticisms of the Board of views, Education. One of the most recent of The overwhelping opinion was in these adverse criticisms was contained in favour of, free seats for all at the church, the Headmaster's report of the Diocesan the speakers asserting that the amount of Buya' School in which it was stated: pew rents involved they would casily" and The Vicar (the Rev. strongly advocated that all seats be' free. It was not free. pows that he wanted but free church, rendy to welcome all who might come.

"

After considerable discussion Mr. R Packham moved a resolution that pew ruits be abolished as from the 30th June this year. This was seconded and on a show of 'batics carried with two dis- Bontients.

The Vicar, who was in the chair, called on the Treasurer (Mr. D. A. "Purves) who, in presenting the financial statement for the year, mentioned that over $10,000 went to salaries. Another big item was $9,147 for Furnishing

the Assistant Clergyman's residence Pasages and freight was a big item, $5.327, bat this Offertories Lor expense they would not have to bear again for a low years. the year totalled over 26,000 and pew rents 8403.

Addressing the large audicace, Mr. Mackintosh opened his remarks by com- plimeating the Headmaster of the School (Mr. P. Tsui) on the work of the school and, after regretfully commenting on the absence and illness of the Right Rev. Bishop Pazzoni, whom he wished a speedy recovery, and the absence of the Hop Mr. E. Irving (Director of Education), also indisposed, he made reference to the subject of newspapers. He thought" all boys should read the newspapers though, as the speaker put is, "a certain amount of salt should be taken to take the taste away." Newspapers played an extraordi. narily useful part in education and be would recommend a very regular course

The Chairman, speaking of the financiai of newspaper reading, both for their

position, pointed out that Sir Paul Chinese and English studies. If they had Chator, who had promised to build & been doing that they would notice that house for an Assistant Clergyman, had in- stead provided and furnished a fat. some of the newspapers hail been pro Salaries was a big item but he would re- testing against prize-givings: that theremind them it would be bigger this year. were too many of them and that there" But," he added, "you are getting good were so many that the Press could keep value for your money." (Laughter.) The amount of offertories was vory creditable away from them. Some of the head-

indeed. masters had been terrified by this and bad abolished prizes and prize-givings. He was glad to see that the Headmaster of the Wai Yan School bad been suf- ficiently old fashioned to carry on with his birthday party, as the speaker expressed it, He only hoped that the children's parents would come to such functions. He believed that this was the great way in which they could get the

The Vestry was then elected as follows: parents of the boys to take a real live-The Rev. G. R. Lindsay, the Rev. G. A interest in the school In this way also they could also hope to establish a con- nection between old and modern Chiza. He then came to his important point the criticism of the Board of Education. "Now in case you have read the news- papers," he said, you may have noticed some facts-or alleged facts about the people to whom your education is en- trusted. I want you to have every coa- fidence in your Educational Authorities. You must have confidence in your head- master because you have proved him. I want you to have confidence in the rest of us. I don't want you to believe as you have been told-to believe-that there are non-experts guiding your education. I do not think they are really quite so ludicrous as some public: men would ask you to believe. I bave been trying to make up my mind as to what is the real meaning of the words Educational Ex- pert, so this morning I telephoned to the Editor of one of the four leading papers of the Colony asked him if he could give me a definition of the words, educational expert. Oh yea,' tac Editor replied, an educational expert is crown for my head that men may wor 3 man greatly experienced in the educa-ship me, or ordered "your maidens say tion of the young. If that is all you ing" Come dance before me that I may want you can be quite satisfied with youre gay." Then, if that is the case, Board of Education. First of all you concluded the speaker, "it were better have got on that Board Dr. Pearce. I am sorry he is not here this afternoon that the day had not dawned on which you were born uor the night had never If there is any one man in this Colony, been on which it was said Behold a who can lay claim to being an educa man child has been conceived." (Ap- tional expert, it is, Dr. Pearce-(applause) and so long as he sits on your Board of Education then you are in the hands of an expert and, the meetings of that Board are not altogether ludicrons. And then you have Mr. Stewart, who has been a beadmaster for many years, and if the definition is in any shape true then he is an expert. You have also Father Valtorta and you used to have Father Maria. Of these I would say neither of them are inexperienced in the matter of education nor are there accasions, on which they are likely to be ladicrous.

The Chairman went on to speak grate

fully on the services rendered by the Rev.-1 Mr Bailey to the Church while he, the speaker, was on leave

Addressing the members of the Church, the Vicar said he saw from the minutegi that the previous year he used up all j« adjectives in connection with the Vestry Be "could in the work they bad done. only underline them. He thanked all workers in the Church of every kind for what they had done

"So my message for you, and all others in the Colony, is to have confidence in those who are guiding your education and your destiny. I suppose it really comes down to this: What do we mean by éducation Education means, I think, something a great deal more than the I don't mere imparting of knowledge. believe that education is an end in itself -although many educational enthu Biasts think I ought to believe that I think it is the means to an end. I be- lieve it is a systematic instruction given to the young in preparation for the work of life and I don't balieva education is worth anything at all unless it is given 11K preparation for the work of life. And that is what I want to impress upon you students here today. Nearly 2,000 years ago the educational expert of the day wrote a letter. In it he said this: T

am writing to you young men because, you are strong,' and I am not at all sure that if St. John had lived in modern times that he would not have given the same sort of message and that he would not have based his belief upon the same Bort of argument that he used 2,000 years) ago. Just as I venture to appeal to you to use your strength to the betterment of the land in which you live."

Arrowsraith, Sir Paul Chator, Mr. E. Packham. Mr. A. E. Farrell, Mr. D. A Purves, Mr. J 3. Robson, Mr. N. L. Railton and Mr. A. W. Smith,

The following were elected to the Diocesan Confcrepee: Miss Hollis, Miss Fergusco, Mr. A. W. Smith, Mr. O. B. Baren and Mr. R. Packham.

The Vicar elected Mr. J. J. Robson as his Warden and Mr. R. Packham was elected Peoples' Warden.

Mr. Mackintosh, continuing his exhorta- tion, advised the students to sim, not so inocracy but rather, to make democracy much at making the world safe for de- sale for the world. (Applause:) Their influence with Chinese labourers woul be valuable if they responded to the call to work for the betterment of the world. if you do this, they would thank God for the courage of your Headmaster and those like him, who refused to shrink from their task because of the "howling of the wolves."
