BOTTOMLEY AND THE WARDERS.

In addition to the dismissal of two warders for alleged complicity in sing gling Bottomley's writings from prison, the Weekly Despatch states that twenty others have been punished with fines and loss of privileges after a thorough en- quiry by the Board, including the Inspec tor of Prisons, which has issued new and dis- more stringent regulations for prison cipline.

The new rules include an alteration of the prisoners" routine, the transference of the warders to new blocks and stricter

whole supervision over tradesmen, of the changes are designed to prevent collusion between wurders or between the warders and the outside world. Even the senior wardera will now be kept in ignor- ance of the movements of the high off- cials with view to enforcing strict obedience to 'the regulations.

It appears that Bottomley established widespread intimacy with the warders, who called him "Mr. Bottomley," instead of by his prison number. He wrote to a frm of publishers asking them to employ A warder's son, who, it is alloged, used to convey parcels from Bottomley's friends to the prison. He also offered to find positions for the sous of other warders. Some of the warders accepted the hospitality of Bottomley's friends and allowed Bottomley to have champagne hunches with his friends when taken from prison for beskruptcy examination,
