ROYALTY AT HOME.
- ETIQUETTE AT THE KING'S,
DINNERS.
When the King and Queen return to Buckingham Palace each autumn-they havo just arrived from York Cottage, Sandringham-they usually give avsories! of quiet dinner parties Both their Majesties are very fond of this sort of entertaining and these royal parties are delightfully regal yet not overwhelmingly
10:
Guests. on arrival at the Palace, are madeau hit with the etiquette of the Court. They are notified of the hour when they will be expected to he present in the anteroom, and here, in two lines, they await the coming of the royal hosts! The table used on these beensions is long and somewhat narrow, tastefully decor- ated with Bowers, and gleaming with cut glass and beautiful silverware-the great gold service comes out but rarely. Half way down on each side the King and Queen take their sents, all the guests standing until the royal pair are seated. It is one of the many little tasks of her ladies-in-waiting to place beside the Queen's plate a pair of white, gloves and a bouquet of flowers often sweet peas, of which she is very fond.
The Queen appears' always in full even ing dress, wearing a magnificent diamond necklace, the gift of Queen Victoris, n diamond brooch, the gift of the King, and A pair of earrings, famous pearls which have came down to her Majesty from her
own ancestors.

In order to be able to speak with some lowledge to each guest, both hosts have ade themselves ac- quainted with the special branch of learn- ing or social or political activity of ench guest beforehand. In this preliminary the King's secretaries assist him, whilst it is part of the duty of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting to inform her upon any subject when necessary."
"NO MODERVISMt. ."
The Queen, as is well known, has pro- nounced views on many subjects. She dislikes intensely anything savouring of the ultra-modern and any guest who offends her Majesty's susceptibilities looks in vain for another inritation to dine at Buckingham Palace.
The ladies whom the Queen chooses for her ladies-in-waiting are of the eldest noble families in the land'; and from those families who, like the Queen 'ber- self, are out of sympathy with very. imodernistic tendencies. Among the pre- sent ladies-in-waiting are the Duchess of Devonshire, the Countess Minto and Countess Ampthill. Each of these ladies has her own snug little quarters in the Palace consisting of sitting room, bed- room and bathroom; with acccomoda- tion for her own personal maid.
Palace dinner parties usually end at eleven o'clock soon after which hour the King likes to retire. Both their Majesties dislike late hours; and both are early risers. On many of these autuma morn ings the King is up and about by seven; and very often half an hour later he is to be seen enjoying a canter in the Row with one of his equerries or one or more of his sons:
