AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL
DEBT.
STANDARD OF CREDIT VERY HIGH.
Upon the Acting Prime Minister aud Treasurer of the Commonwealth of "Australia, Dr. Earle Page, is thrown the responsibility of handling £81,000,000 of revenue. Addressing a public meeting in October, Dr. Page said it was not suf ficiently emphasised that Australia had ample security for the national debt, The standard of Australia's credit was very high, and the proportion of her debt to her developed resources was compara tively small, so that interest rates should not be too high. The Ministry had just concluded "an attempt to convert one of the first war loans that had to be re
The deemed, amounting to £38,700,000. conversion had been a remarkable success. The Treasury had been able to obtain some
services thing like £32,000,000 of the money that it set out to obtain. That had either been reconverted or else was new cash. People with £32,000,000 to invest took up tha loan as a business proposition, and £8,500,000 of new money came in without any big propaganda, because the inves tors recognised that the terms were fait. and the security was the best that could be obtained. Australian securities were exceptionally good-as good as any in the world. Eight.or nine years ago when' the fret war loan was floated it was thought a wonderful thing to raise £5,000,000 in now cash. The result of the recent conversion was very satisfactory indeed. It showed that the "country's credit was good. That was emphasised by the fact that the London money market at the beginning of October offer. ed terms that were just the same as those originally offered by the Commonwealth Ministry for the recent conversion, and this loan was oversubscribed within three ilnys.
