THE VALLEY OF BONG.

A VALLEY, UNLIKE ANY OTHER VALLEY

[BY CLAUDEER IN THE CALCUTTA

ENGLISHMAN."]

When "The Raja of Bong Piwna, staged in London, the audience little thought that the land of Bong actually existed. It was not discovered by but, became known to the, world, from extracta from the diary of Colonel Howard Bury, the leader of the first Everest Expedition who prased through the valley-",

Flashes-

of the Past

That is Just What Good Pictures are; They bring the Past back to Life..

Take Pictures To-day; To- morrow and Everyday.

I should like to live in this valley of A. TACK & Co., Bong, enjoy ita peace and quietness and inhale its pure air of sanctity. Whore it is, and all I have learnt about it from a dweller the vale, I givo below :-- ...

Looking at an up-to-date map of the southern "boundary of Tibet, there will be found the fort of Kampa (Kampad zong) to the left of Shigatze; between this fort and the foot of Mount Everest lies the Valley of Bong watered by the sacred Arun river. It is a valley unlike any other valley, and the air of the valley is the nir of sanctity, and the peace that reigu in the valley is the peace that this troubled world cannot give. No Europeans knew of the valley until the Mount Everest Expedition passed through it. and they did thing that they ought not to have done for want of knowledge: but made good in their second attempt to climb Mount Everest and by their res pect for all things shered to an alien faith, ndded greatly to the prestige of the reen from which they were sprung.

NATURE AT HER BEST.

In this valley are flowers, such flowery that can and cannot be found in England and Europe. Here they grow and flourish and die to cast their Erarance in the desert air and their seed for the snows of winter to preserve, till Nature desires nt spring to fertilize them and allow them to bloomy in undisturbe pener, for although, vegetables are not included among the living things of the world among the Buddhists., yet Flowers are placed to ornament and adorn their sanctuaries and shrines. Here, in this peaceful valley. Nature is respected by the Bhuddist faith and Nature haarishes! where encouraged. Life is respected by the Bhuddist faith in this beautiful valley. aud Life flourishes. Even the very waters of the river that flows through the valley -the Aran river, aro saéred to the Bhud- dists and the river flows undisturbed through the flowering gorges of Tibet and repan to join the sacred waters of the Ganges and the dreaded kala pani of the Bay of Bengal...

MONK CAVE DIVELLINGS.

A way on the rock-crowned height of the valley are the care dwellings of the monks of Bong. The dwellings of the monks And nuns, of an order which is quite di tinct and which for want of proper in- formation I have been obliged to term the Order of Bang, stretch for many hundred yards on the Face of the cliffs: visit the valley at dawn, and the eyes will gaze on a sight on a belief-animal, wild. knowing their lives to be safe, and aware that in this peaceful valo the hands of man is not turned against them, par their morning visite in the newes ings, soliciting in their dumb fabion. the little the monks and mans have to give them, and which they seem to be aware of, is given with all good feelings and Free hand. Having received their dole, these wild mountain animals wander up the heights to feed on the parce her bage which is all the call of these northern altitudes have to offer them.

The monastery bell, on the highest peak sends out its sonorous sonunaus..over the wide waste and the beautiful valley at its fnot, the monks and nuns form a proces- sion and climb slowly ap the rocky height to attend the summies and partake in the worship of-meditation on the image of bi plio for-aking a kingdom,, home and wealth, wandered away to meditate on the scrrors and sufferings of this world and to leave behind him the thoughts that are now adopted as the teets of Bud- dhi mayings which are as pure as the aly of the Valley of Bong.

It is while the monks and gung are toiling up the height to answer the sum- mous of the bell, that the birds of the air come to them, perch on their shoulders, and eat from the hands held out to them- hands which are never empty, but day after day are filled with grain in expecta tion of their visits.

Shooting and the destruction of life is unknown in the peaceful Valley of Bung, il many feathered tribes have left their natural habitats in some far distant Innd, to seek the undisturbed peace of the valley to live their lies in security and seclusion in the valley where the only disturbing Bound, which after a time they become accustomed to, is the snoreas tones of the "Gomba"! calling the monks and

gong nuns to prayer,"

It is enough to keep body and soul together and no more, but the good monks and man" are thankful for the grain is sanctified and the greater portion must be stored in the granari of His Holiness, the Dalama, the incarnation of Buddha, the spi aal head of Tibet and in the contentment of this thought, they' live, pray and die in the peace and surround. ings of the beautiful Valley of Boog

Violent canet were witnessed in Mel bourne on November 3rd as a result of the police strike Bands of hooligans smashed shop windows and looted every- thing on which they bould lay their hands. Upwards of 100 casualties are isported. Three people were killed. Order has been restored

The Postmaster-General (Sie It Wor- "Thington-Evans), mojeäîng the British Wireless Exhortion said that there were | 492,000 listemug-in Jicences compar- "sal with 170,000 at the end of September. This was the result of the appeal to private. “ listeners in. I shall not be content, until the number of : licences îñ quadrupled, every cottage ought to have an apparatus," he added.

UNION OF SOUTH-AFRICA

Fox

RESIDENCE, FARMING, TRAYEL.

go

The Union of South Africa is of Interest to Earopeans in the Far East. If they are retiring on pension, there are many pleasant South African towns in which to live. If they seek career, and have a moderate capital, there is scope in South Africa for planters a farmers. And for those in need of boliday, the country is famed as a trävel aïd health resort.

The climate is equable. It is" sunny but temperate, being neither so inclement in winter as that of Northern Europe, nor so enervating in summer as that of the East. It is

■ genial, wholesome climate in which Europeans thrive.

The rougher work in South Africa is done by coloured labourets and" domestics. Educational facilities are good, the young can now take their University degrees in South Africa. The larger towns are modernly equipped, and many of the smaller. ones are very congenial residentially. There are numerous resorts-motin- tain, river and marine, for an occa sional change. Sport is plentiful. The cost of living and income tax- ation compare favourably with those elsewhere.

short the Union of South Africa is an uncommonly attractive country. Full particulars may be obtained from the Publicity Agent, Office of the High Commissioner for the Union of South Africa, Trafalgar Square, London, w.c.a. Specify requirements.
