HOPE IN EMPIRE TRADE..

The Right Hou, S. M. Bruce, Prime Minister of Australia, was the guest at luncheon on October 24th of the Assucin- tion of British Chambers of Commerce at the Hotel Victoria, and in the course of his speech he uttered a grave warning ear cerning the commercial future of Britain,

"The position of Britain among the commercial nations of the world," he said, **is in most serious jeopardy, and unless something can be done to iniprove British industry, then our case in the future is go lug to be a very parlous one"

While many men realised that this was a very dangerous hour for the commerce of Britain and the Empire, there were, he said, very few who were presenting the case to the people of Great Britain in its full significance.

M

Els could not believe that there was any possibility of Britain finding in the imme diate future those great markets in Europe, which would absorb her nun- ployed population.

The only markets, he suggested, to which we could look for increasing British trade were in our great Empire overseas, and if we did the right thing we weru go- ing to create markets which very few people had visualised even in their wildest! dreams.

In less than forty years our oversus trade with the five great, Dominions bad

He challenge that statement. They were told very often that the Dominions ought to be absorbing. very much greater numbers of migrants. Personally be thought that the views on this matter had been overdone. In Aus tralia they were determined to absorb migrants only in so far as they were ablo to provide them with work and enable them to lead happy lives. At the same time they did not want to stop the flow of migrants; they wanted to increase it. But the obligation largely rested on the -houlders of commercial men to help to solve the problems they were faced with, There were many industries which could be established in Australia; some of them could he better established in Australia than anywhere else. Sir Arthur Ballour, the president, wha occupied the chair, in his opening ad- dress, said: "I believe that inflation is as malignant a disease as cancer. (Hear hear.) From my own personal experience the very word, inflation, uttered by Great Britain, started a panic abroad. A friend in Geneva spoke to me on the subject recently, and I told him I was perfectly convinced that the sound opinion in Great Britain would fight and fight to the last against any further in- flation. (Hear, hear. It was no doubt a necessary evil during the war, but it was really another form of capital lovy, a very insidious "form. Its correction is much more difficult than its starting, and: coquires a great deal of political courage 4o put into operation. Inflation causes people to live in a fool's paradise, and it reduces the efficiency of the people and the production of the country." It was possible, he added. that this country de flated too quickly. If that was so it was due to our inite honesty and the desire to get back to the fundamentals as soon As possible.

Lord Kylsat said that the City of Loudon was behind the speaker Wien he poke of, the appulling risks of inflation.

Anyone who had done so would know that there was only one result of inflation-a short time of prosperity and then everything went wrong. (Heur," hear) We had had a very difficult time during the last two and a half years. But we were Britons and were going to see it through. Those who took long views were beginning to a better outlook in front of the country. (Hear, hear.)"
