THE NEW CHINESE ALPHABET.

Mr. Crawford Marrison Bishop, Jecturer in Chinese. New York University, cun. tributes to the Chòm Review (New York) an artigle in which he says:

Each word is illustrated by a picture of the abject. It is a method of teaching by sight simultaneously with teaching by sound.

The Committee for the Promotion of Phonetic Writing above referred to is an unofficial body. The new method of spelling Chinese words is a phonetic system. It has 39 simple character which, written singly or in cubination, sin, represent every word in the Mandarin" dialect, Mandarin is the dialect of Peking, which is the official or national language of the Re- public of China, and which is understood?" by vedented persons in all parts of the

conuty.

These 30 symbols or characters take'} the place of the 50,000 ar 150,000 characters anking up the written Chinese language. It will be possible by teyrning these to acquire a vocabulary much more quickly add easily than by having to learn the characters used in The olif system.

This Alphabet consists of 24 initial isters, the medial letters and twelve final letter Strictly speaking they represant not always a single lett. of the Engilsh nipualet, but frequently several letters: consting of memor. vowels or a guwel agon or mere causonants.

Chinese words are all of one syllable, so that it will act nanily require more than three of these synthols, to represent a single word,

It must remembered, however, that
