NAVY'S SEED OF AIR SERVICE

“A very distinguished "committee „has, placed the Navy in the unfortunate posi tion of having to sayCan we use an acroplane? If the Navy wants an acro- plane the admiral has to get through to another department and say, 'Will you oblige me by going up into the air and doing so and so? Sonic people have compared the new Air Force with the Marines, quite forgetting that the Marines helong to the Admiralty, while the Air Force belongs to another department

One of the lessons of the war is that, Beets served with reliable spotters can, gain great initial advantage in gunfire, and that is the reason why the Navy must have the host trained observers, trained for the senin fart. true seanien."

War in the future would be in three phases-surface, sub-surfave, and the air. Cruisers were as necessary as ever in Navy history. We must possess, more cruisers than any other single Power iu. the work

RECONSTRUCTION. .

An important statement on the subject of the reconstruction of the Royal, Air Force was made by Sir Samuel Hoare, Seretary of State for Air, at a meeting at Chichester, on October Ft.

We want," he said, to make the new Force as "efficient, as possible, but we also want to organise it as econo oically as possible. On the ground of reonemy, therefore, we are going to embody in it a substantial element of what will call nou-regulir personnel."

It had been decideil to create a hemse defence force of fifty-two squadrons, so organiseil as make further expansion possible, if found necessary.

There would be three kinil of qunil rous, namely

CAMBRIDGE UNION DEBATE.

-The Cambrige Union Society discussed. on October 16th the motion, “That in the opinion of this house the influence of the Press on public epintor is inervading and is to be deplored. Among those who took part in the debate were Mr. G. K. Chesterton, Mr. H. Hamilton. Fyfe, and Sir John Fost Fraser.

Mr. A. P. Marthall (Caius College), |who proposed the motion, gaid it was the duty of the Press to preach righteous. He denounced the vulgar sensationalism of some sections of the Press, the dicta torial attitude of other sections, and the poison gas emitted by some newspapers.

Mr. J. W. B. Sparrow Trinity Hall), opposing said he thought the people were tired of hearing the Press pelfad with every kind of ignorant innuendo. The influence of the Press, be believed, had been ng acnourably for the benefit of maakipl
