DEFENDING THE CHRISTIAN
HOME.
BISHOP OF LONDON AND
VM DIVORCE :
The Bishop of London, speaking at Church House, Westminster, on October 13th at a mass meeting of the London Branch of the Mothers' Union, said they did not want any - extension of the grounds of divorce. They were defend- ing the Christian home, and the Chris tina home was the greatest safeguard and the frentest treasure a woman had. The Church had never sanctioned divorce. In rending our Lord's words there was only one ground for divorce, and that was infidelity. The moment they began to spread it to cases of husbands drinking or in lunatic asylums, or who had been convicted, they were simply giving our Lord's words an impossible rendering, aad they should oppose it as Christinus and church-people. He hoped the Mother's Union would help him in this most difficult task. of safeguarding the marriage laws. He had carried in for! tcuty-two years the fight that no one should he married in a church in London who had a husband or a wife alive. They were maintaining in the heart of the Empire the indissolubility of matrimony. (Hear, henr.)
Continuing the bishon said that he had been teetotaller for forty years, and he honestly attributed his extra- ordinary good health at 63 years of age not only to being a teetotaller. but to alling a non-smaker. They still had to fight & battle in Parliament with re- gard to the drinking hours. They had men of the world and the whole strength! of the drink trade against them, and unless they were very careful they would go back to the old days. "It was the differ- ence between heaven and hell," an East- end derpynn hati said when referring to the old and the ww hours. Concluding. the bishop wil that it was the business of the mothers gently and quietly to Requint themselves with the facts of human life, and to tell them to their daughters. If the fathers would not tell their boys, they should."
OF
THE CHURCH AND SOCIAL REFORM.
CLERGY. DIVIDED VIEWS·
The conference of modern Churchmen was resumed at Girton College, Cambridge, on
September 8th.
Canon C. S. Woodward, vicar of St. Peter's, Cranley-gardens, said that the weakness of nineteenth-century Christianity was that it tried to maintain an unreal distinction between the material and the! spiritual. No such distinction could be aus tained the two.spheres actid and reacted
each other continually. The sons of the kingdom must take their full share in they directing the life of the community must be politicians in the highest sense of the word, striving to remove bud housing. underpayment, unemployment, and the like. The infant mortality in Kersing- ton wis second caty in the whole of Lon don to Shoreditch, because of the appal ling housing coalitions in North Kensing ton. He preached two rather vigorous sermons on the subject, and a strong depat ution of parishioners was formed to wait upus the Borough Council, with the result that now something was being done to remedy the conditions.
Canon Tullinton deprecated such a method of direct action.' It would be a great danger, he said, if on the strength of que "successful case they were to take. this as a general policy for the Church to adopt, because he felt that if such direct action were generally, recognized as a normal part of the Church's duty, they might be landed in quas very disastrous results. The better way was for the Church to endeavour to create the right pirit and the right gutlook in all her members. If that could be done prenle would do the right thing without being urged to do so by the Church in any official manner.
The Dean of Carlisle said that instancos such as that quoted by Canon Woodward were matters of expedienes which every nan must settle for himself, and for which no general rule could be laid down. Ec clesiastical assemblies were apt to adopt ideas that were either hopelessly vague or lse involved a particular scheme of econ nic change with which a very large num ber of thoughtful Christians might dis agree.
THE PLEASURES OF LIVING | LOVE OF CREATIVE WORK.. Lecturing at Browsing Hall, Walworth, "The Pleasures of Living," Dr. Josiah Oldfield clumed that we are. suffering to-day largely from the curso of discontent brought on by delusions that have been shattered. "There is only one royal and universal way to content- ment, said Dr. Oldfield, and this lies through work, through doing individual creative work, and through the love of loing it. There is only one way to health, and that is through obedienco to Nature's law of air and sunshine, to the body a dietary as gathered in the Garden of Eden, porous and light clothing, a night for sleep and a day for oil, and an abhorrence of all drugs. There is more joy in owning half an acre of land, and growing roses and apples and cabbages in your spare time, thun In possessing a Rolls-Royce and road- hogging to Brighton every week-end. Lazarus, in my opinion, had the best of it in both worlds, for be had a good appetite and plenty of bread to satisfy it, and kindly dogs to dress his sores with healing saliva on earth, and fortable corter in Abraham's bosom in heaven. The rich man had indigestion and the worry of changing his clothes, and the insincerity of sycophant servants robbing Him all his life, and then a bell of misery after death. The delusion of every age is that money brings happi ness. whorene the pleasure lies in the striv ing for it, and not in the posapasing it, No man should ever look forward to retiring in order to enjoy himself. Ho 1 sould gather fruit from the troos,
Small pimples began to appear on baby's face. As time WEST ON they festered and formed sene erup-- tions which soon spread to the baby's arms and legs. The Itching and smarting were awful and some nights we hardly got any test.
We sent for a free sample of Conicura Soap and Ointment and after using noticed a great improve-: ment; to purchased more, which healed the eruptions.” Signed): Alfred B. Simmer, 13, Cross

UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA
FOR
RESIDENCE, FARMING, TRAYEL.
The Union of South Africa is of Interest to Europeias in the Far East.. If they are retiring on pension, there are many pleasant South African towns in which to live. If they seek
carcer, and have a moderate" capital, there is scope in South Africa for planters and farmers. And for those in need of a holiday, the country. is famed as a travel and health resort.
The climate is equable. It is sunny but temperate, being neither so inclement in winter as that of Northern Europe, nor so enervating in summer as that of the East. It is genial, wholesome climate in which Europeans thrive.
The rougher work in South Africa is done by coloured labourers and dumestics.Educational facilities are "good, the young can now take their University degrees in South Africa. The larger towns are molemnly equipped, and many of the smaller enes are very congenial residentially There are numerous resorts-muun- tain, river and marine, for, an occa- signal change. Sport is plentiful. The cost of living and income tax- tion compare favourably with those alsowhere.
