While Philippine scholars say that the comparison between what has or may be found here with the relie from the trea sures of the Pharaohs found in Tutank- hamen's mountain tomb is far-fetched and quite erroneous, they also contend that Dr. Guthe's explorations are bound to throw much valuable light upon in- anlar history and clear up points about which there has been much doubt.

ERRONEOUS CONCLUSION.

for

Dr. Guthe, in a little less than a year, bas explored cares and ancient burial places on the islands of Bohol, Samar and Lebu. His work has been rewarded by recovery of specimens of Chinese arts and handicrafts of Tang, Sung and Ming dynast.es. But the conclusion that the specimens prove Chinese occupation of the Philippines during the period of these three dynasties is neither warrant ed. from Dr. Guthe's finding nor in ae cordance with other known facts, it is asserted here.

iF

What the specimens do prove,or. rather, abundantly corroborate, is that Chinese traders visited the islands for a long period during these three dynasties, and that the Malayans were influenced by Chinese in their social customs;" and it is probable that the Chinese religion. in corrupted form, true to the repetition of history in such instances was adopt ed or blended with the native faith.

fade axes and adzes, skilfully fashion- ik ed, with good cutting edges still without! the slightest nick, have beon dredged from a depth of about 20 feet below the Pasig River in the vicinity of the town of Pasig, Two such axes are now in the possession of Dr. Otley Bayer, of the University of the Philippines, who believes them to belong to the Chou dynasty, thus turn- ing back pages of Chinese relations (as traders) with the Philippines to at least the 4th century B.C.

Dr. Guthe's discovery of the Tang dynasty pottery bridges a part of the gap between this ancient time, contem- porary with Athens in its flower, and the Later Sung and Miog periods, of which something had been known price to his work here. In fact important specimens of Sung and Ming pottery exist in the Philippine Museum, as the work of pre- vious explorers.

Thus specimens. which now engage Dr. Guthe's abilities are of course chießy valuable from the archeological stand- paint: they are types of ordinary Chinese pottery of their respective periods, and not such precious and costly things n would be placed in the fomis of an Ryptian Pharaoh.

Results of his efforts in the two years more that he is to be here.are awaited with keen interest by Philippine anthro- pologists and enthralogists in the hop that further discoveries will morn closely unite the broken chain of epoch periods in the Islands past -Hrufer,
