PEKING AND SHANGHAI: On a brief visit to Shanghai I have met three Chinese notables who in former days would be classed with the Chinese gentry and allowed to wear the mandarin robes and the blue or red mandarin button. They were ex-President Li Yuan. Hung of Hankow Peking, Tientsin and now of Shanghai; ex-Premier and ex-Envoy Tang Shao Yi of Southern Kwangtung and Sir Robert Ho-Tung of the British Colony of Hongkong. The first two had held office in Peking and therefore had become used to the poli- tical climate of the north as well as familiar with the political climate of the south. Whatever their theories of Boy ernment, they are intensely patriotic, and back up their oplulans by wide cx perience. I talked with each of them twice, and the second time they know
