FIRE EXTENSION LADDER
BREAKS...
CHINESE FIREMAN KILLED.
A Chinese fireman belonging to the "City Fire Brigade, was killed instantane- ously on Saturday morning, by the snap- ping of an extension ladder while he was at work cleaning the top of it, at a height of 85 feet. What actually happened just previous to the accident is not known as the other members of the Brigade were working elsewhere about the Station. The first thing noticed was the swaying to and fro of the ladder which had been.. run out to its full height at an angle of 45 degrees. This swaying was followed, hy a sound of wood splintering. The top, half of the ladder then toppled sideways over the tramlines and the man fell on. the other side of the road with a sickens": ing thud. He was picked up by his coms rades in a pool of blood outside Der Wing's.
The noise caused by the falling ladder. caused people living in the offices above the fire station to rush out on to the verandahs, only to see that the overhead tramlines had been barne down by the weight of the ladder, and were sparking One of the wires was snapped and the two loose ends trailed on the ground. There was a consequent raterruption of the tram service for a time. MOMS
