About eighty were present including Mr. Edwin S. Cunningham, American Consul General, Judge Charles S. Lobin- gier M-3-Harold Dollar, Dr. WT. Findley, Mr. S. Fessenden, Major Arthur Bassett, Capt W. I. Elslor, Capt Olsen and Major Stewart of the S.V.C. Mr. C. S Franklin, Com mander presided.

Sir ROBERT in a speech said:

I thank you for the honour you have done me in inviting me to say a few words to this gathering with referenes to the plan for a Round Table Confer

ence.

Ordinarily. I would feel rather diffident about speaking before a com pany of men who belong to a nation of barn omtors. Happily, this is not my 6rst experience in addressing Americans. Some five years ago I had the honour of speaking at a reception tendered by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, and the kind attention paid to me then! encourages me to come here to-day to address you gentlemen.

The American Legion. I believe, stands for Service and. Unity; and the purpose of the Round Table Conforenen proposed by me is for Service and Unity in this great country of China. In these aims I am sure we have" your whole-hearted sympathy. I realise that I am before an audience of China's friends. You live in this country, it is your second home in reality, your adopt- ed country. You have brought your families here and are educating your, children here. Your business enterprises are here, and the welfare of China in KING'S REGT. . H.M.S. AMBROSE.” your welfare. For if China is peaceful and prosperous, you will benefit thereby. Coming to present internal condi tions in Ohing, since the establishment of the Republic there has been constant disernsion and fighting, the direct regula of different leaders each wanting his own way and thinking his way the best for caring the country's ills. There has beca En regrettable, want of cohesion and co- operation. The strength and wealth of the nation have been dissipated in these personal, quarrels. It is difficult to esti mate what the cost has been thus far but it is certain that many hundreds of millions have been wasted that could have King's. been utilised not only to establish China's Tamar credit in the world and place her HK Cab finances on a firm basis, but for the con. THE PROBLEM.

Here is a problem which on the Lace of, it is so simple: Here is a big, rich country, with wonderful natural re- sources undeveloped; with virgin areas untouched; with a man-power such as no nation in the world possesses; with golden opportunities waiting ovely turn. Yet the progress made is, out of all proportion to what it should be were there bo. domestic troubles Jewel

Now, it is difficult to believe that any of the big men in China are so evil Biomede
