The Roy, Canon de Candole, addressing the Church Congress at Plymouth of Sept. 25th, sald the task of presenting the Christian ideal to the mind and consicioace of educated people was a formidabio one, but the signs of the time were not so aufavourable as they sometimes imagined. They must first try to get at the point of view of the modern man. The day, had long pussed when they could make their appeal to a form of authority oe dogma which wettled, things by a mere spar dizit, Far les could they expect any claim for the miraculous to rouse conviction. These thing simply did not count with the modern heirer, It was the failure to recognise this that was largely responsible for the present distrust of organised--reli- gion. The considering man set himself to examine all truth without 'bins, At all costs he would be honest and open-minded; no desire for gainer fear of los would made him barter his heritage of freedom and independence of thought. Starting from this he found himself at once up against two outstanding features of Christing faith, the presence of the supernatural or miraculou»^and-

moving steadily, though not gaite unanimously, from theories of the universe which definitely precluded the Christinn solution of its riddle to theories which, to make to higher claim than was justified, were not out of harmony, with that sold tios. That was significant and encouraging, and became still more so when they went on to recognise that the form of this spiritual interpretation of the universe was shaping, itself in terms of personality. Personality was the real touchstont of truth, and in the study of personality, they began to find
solution of their problems.
On the side of the Church there must be a frank recognition that modern thought necessitated some changes in their modes of expression, Now knowledge had come to light, and on the basis of is there had been formed new theories of matter, of the structure of the universe, of the develop ment of terrestial-life, and of the origin of man. They no longer believed that the earth" was the centre of the universe or that the Bible record, of creation was cientific. Man had been evolved through some lower-form of animal life, and had been gradually developing for centuries, or rather millenia of years. In criticism they had learnt to, part with theories of inspiration which procenes of literary and historical inquiry hid rendered untenable. The Bible represented a growth and re- corded the gradual unfolding of truth as men were able to bear it, and carried the inevitable traces of the limitations of its writers. From the other side, too, they must ark for on-mindedness, for a frank recognition of all the facts of human life, notably those of religious experience, which were among the clearist and least disputal things in history and for le confidence of the finality of the Tast word in science or criticista. Granted this spirit. on both sides they could surely march to gether as allies in the common cause of Truth (Cheers,)

There is practically no disease that is not at work in some part of the huge ocean at any given date Cholera, plague (which in New Caledonia is incredicable), malaria, leprosy, beri beri (sleeping sickness), influenza" (which is now one of the worst death-recorders) are all well known. What, however, the foreign health authorities seem to be afraid of is yellow, fever, although sincé the Spanish left the Philippines there has heen no epidemic. But the yellow fever mosquito, the stegomya, is common prac fically all over the Pacific, and if the disease did get entry again it might well he a very difficult task to gain the upper hand over it.
Actually the Australian authorities are not perturbed, They consider, and in view of the statistics probably rightly, that yellow fever is so unlikely that it in not yet worth bothering about, whilst in fluenza is taking a terrific toll of life, and.. there appears to be no remedy, nor even a preventive. The losses among the native races in the islands during the epidemic of 1040 and 1021 were enormous Among the whites, both in New Zealand and in Australia, the death-rate more than doubled the ormatAlso the authorities regard the influx of Indians into the Pacific islands as hejug fraught with the strong possibility of the intro- duction of varions Indian disenses, in particular of kaliazar, which has worked such havoc in Bengal and in Assam
The Pacific population discussion most ly had reference to the disappearance of the island races, who are being replaced by hordes of Indian and Chinese coolies, of varying brecds. and habits. This is matter which hitherto has not attracted much attention in Australin, except from the point of view of the sugar companies, which have welcomed the coolie us cheap Jaliour
