Mr & the different individuals Bros from separate ova, and they were not invari De REG ably of the same sex, and were no more like each other than were offspring produced by the same parents at different times. It would fallow from this that the sex of the individual was de termined by the constitution of the fer-fr tilised vum at the tins of fertilisation.
Experimental breeding work, which had been carried out with the little fruit-By drosophila melanogaster, showed that this insect the male produced two sorts of reproductive rella, but the evidence went to prove that in other animali it was the female that elaborted two sorts. As an example he took the case of the character itic gold and sihir plumage colours in fowl. If Silver. Camping cock was mated with Sicilan Buttercup hens, which were gold, the chickens would be silver. and when these were interbred they would produce equal numbers of males and females. There would be on the average three silvers to one gold in every four, and all the gold would be pulits. From this circumstantial evidence the conclusion was drawn that, in the fowl, sex was deter mined by the presence of a single or double component which, when present in duplicate, led to the production of a male. Yet it had to be admitted that although sex was determined at the time of fertili- sation as it would irrevocably and finally apprar, the possibility was not precluded of the modification of the sex ratio by environmental agencies. There were sever- al established Cises in which environ mental stimuli controlled the differentia tion of the sex organisation of the individual after the general constitution had been decided by the act of fertilinn. tion. How could they reconcile sucrets as this with the already mentioned An interesting hypothesis had been suggell & Mrs LR. Geare in order to do they, Goldschinitit su

--- INTERSEXUALITY
This brought them to another interesting Baltzer matter that of intersexuality. toole larvae at varying periods after the had settled upon, a female proboscis, at before they had become completely male, and forced them to lend an independent life. As a result, he obtained intersexnal forms, either completely male nor con pletely female, but presenting an inter mediate condition. Another type of inter sexuality was that which resulted not from a balanced condition of the male and female deteriniting substances, but from a difference in the rate at which these were elaborated by sex determining factors dur- ing development. This was the state of things in the intersexed of the gypso roth. Still another form of intersexuality was that of the force of pseudo-idtersexuality, which was relatively common among the domesticated mammals. The usual history in these cases was that an individual re garded as a female during the earlier part of its life later assumed many of the char- acteristics of the male. In the gout, for example, a kid, previously looked upon as female, at the time of sexual maturity. began to grow a beard, and about the Animal there hang the pungent emeli so characteristic of the male. The explana- Hion of such a ruse as this was that the Animal always was a male, but the devel- opment of the sex organisation was fúr. Bued in the absence of the directing influence of internal secretion At first- sight such a case as this would seem to be the of dex: reversal. That was not so but sex reversal could and did occur; as had been demonstrated in the gypsy moth, the
and domestic poultry. common frog. That there was a physiological differ- ence between male and female was established. In the human there was a male type of metabolism and a "female type. Sex was determined by sex-deter mining factors which elaborated sex-deter mining substances, b by the interaction of which a certain definita physiological state, beenme

British Income Tax
now Recoverable
T is computed that over fifty millions of pounds are overpaid in Income Tax every year to the British Treasury, and although this money is willingly refunded wherever a claim is established, considerably more than half of this enormous sum is left unclumed by its rightful owners. British subjects overseas alone lose several millions of pounds every year in these over-payments. Many
are unaware that recent legislation entitles them to the refund of this money, others are deterred from claiming on account of the seeming difficulties in the procedure; while sonte attempt to prosecure their own claim and fail through overlooking some technicalities in the regulations. In nine cases out of ten sound expert advice and assistance in preparing the claim will secure a full refund.
Write to-day for an application claim form and will then advise you absolutely free of any chargs exactly what claims you have and how to submit them. During the past 25 years I have prepared no less than 74,000 claims for clients all over the world, and I have recovered for
them sums amounting to well over £2,700,000
