It was a terrific, smashing punch that broke through Dempsaya guard as if it had been tissue paper and sent the champion toppling over liksa ninepin. · As, Dempsey clambered back into the ring he was ob viously dazed, and his lips twisted a wry Esrometer

I would pay a high tribute, to Firpo's gruneness in continuing the fight after he had been floored seven times in quick succession in the first round, and to Dempsey because he did not try to take advantage of his superior boxing skill, but rushed in fearlessly against his huge opponent and took sledge hammer blows for an opportunity to hit back.

The fight was but a few seconds old Mon. 99 whea Dempsey's famous left hook to the chin sent Firpo to his knees Firpo retaliated with a right that dropped at 31 Dempsey momentarily, but the champion quickly recovered, and, with vicious blows to the head and body brought Firpo down five times in rapid succession. Each time the South American struggled gamely to his feet and hurled himself at his opponent like an infuriated bull until bo succeeded in knocking Dempsey clesia out of the ring. The second round last- ed 57sec. Firpo, with set lace and fiery eyes, came rumbling in at Dempsey, but his terrible right was too slow to land, and Dempsey, müstering all big speed, agility, and rapid, accurate hitting, rain- nd trip-hammer blows on Firpo's stomach, 67, sending him reeling with a left to the jaw for a count of two. As Firpo slowly rose Dempsey was on him like a panther, and Firpo was crashed down again for a count of five. With a superhuman effort Firpo rese a third time, crumpled like a tricken ox With a vicious left and right to the jaw he was laid prostrate! en his back until counted out.

Against the all-round fighting efficiency of Dempsey Firpo made a great show of strength and courage, and lost. But he surprised the critics, who said he had no chance. The challenger took one of the most avere beatings ever adminis tered to a heavyweight, and demonstrat ed that he possesses that lion-hearted courage that insiste upon a battle to the death. Dempsey admits that he never faced a more hard-hitting or gamer op- ponent, and popular sentiment will sup port Firpo's claim that he has earned the right to another chance. In a year's time, when the South American becomes better achooted in the art of self-defence and has gained more prize-ring experience. there will perhaps, be a different story to telle

The fight was fairly fought, in the opinion of most experts, despite a com plaint that Damprey ignored the referee's instructions by standing in a neutral. corner when his opponent was down There are also charges that Dempsey hit Firpo several times after the gong ended the first round, but this is attributed to the champion's dazed condition. These blows I saw, but they appeared to have little tting, and could bare bad no tear ing on the final result

The has ball ground, New York, where tho fight was staged was crowded, to, ika utmost capacity, Eighty six thou- mand persons were present. There was a fiberal sprinkling of men and women prominent in American society and sport ing, financial, and political circles A mob several thousand strong were unable to secure admission, and attempted to rush the gates. The police were obliged. 1o use, their clubs to protet the entrances. Box-office receipts, officially announced, show that £24,000 was paid to see the fight. Daupacy's share, approximately,

$100,000, and Firyo's £39,300.
