HAIR. -

PRESS, MONDAY, OCTOBER 22ND, 1923.

Aying American Salvation Army cap tain has been called to account for bobbing. her hair, and the incident, we read, "has caused considerably interest. It is not denied that bobbing may improve the appearance of a Salvation Army ass, or is there a rule against the fashion. But it is frowned upon by the superior. officers. The thought of that frown is, doubtless, enough for most" who tremble before the suault of temptation What is it about a modest and unextravagant mode of hair-dressing that excites so much cantroversy Not long ago, eertain Ameri can business magnates refused to employ girl clerks with bobbed hair or open-work stockings. They gave no reason for their intolerance of girls who liked to arrange their hair to suit their faces, and also liked to be able to keep it clean easily. On the other hand, an American Judgo who hears thousands of divorce petitious yearly gave advice the other day to mar. ried women. If they would keep their husbands they should, "ho mid, bob theiri hair. This he sat on the strength of the fact that he has never in his saddening experience known a bobbed hair wife come before him in a matrimonial suit. Though his logic is lamentable, we know what he means. The woman who expresses herself. naturally by bobbing her Hair is to be encouraged. It may be, as one Salvation Army officer has said, very frivolous. but a little frivolity is a welcome season- ing in most circumstances of life. Tha duty of woman, or, rather, one of the manifold duties which society lays uppa her, is to look her best. Many eccentric modes of hair-dressing have had their day. Edward III% handsome Belgian · Queen introdiced a new and elaborate style of hair adornment, and the elaboration con- tinued through many stages," Few can be said now to have been graceful, unless it were the high-pointed fifteenth-century benin from which hung a wisp of linen. Nothing could have been more ridiculous than the stuffed and decorated erectinis of the eighteenth century. Did men object to short hair in their womenfolk as an encrachaient un "their own comfortable rights! Whether or no, it is certain that, with the exception of Joan of Arc. no woman of not wore her hair bobbed be fore 1914. The really serious reason against bobbed hair is that it needs a. lot of care. It calls for twice as may visits to the hairdresser, and there i nothing like bobbed hair for collecting dast. But it does not necessarily cover at empty head and is very far from being an index to frivolity.---Daily Telegraph.

SEX REVERSAL

EXPERIMENTS WITH FOWLS.

In the Zoological Section of the British Association on September 16th, series of papers on sex reversal and efforts to infinence the determination of sex in various organi ms occupied a long morning session in the presence of a large mixed, Audience:

Dr. WA. E. Crow described eight. cases, forming a consistent serice, illus trating the process by which the female of the domestic fowl undergoes 2 rex trausformation and comes to possess the sex organisation of the male. One bird in the series fauctioned for three years as feninle and then become ultimately the father of chickens. It appears that it is the

presence of growing eccrtes which

the prevents

assumption of male characteristica by the female, and that if this inhibiting physiological id- fluence is removed through disease the internal environmeit may become such as encourage the differentiation into spermatic tissue of the sexcords which periodically invade the sergland. It can therefore be anticipated that in all beas in which the growth of oocytes bas ceased spermatie (male) tissue will be found in some form.

Mr. John R. Baker described some intersexual characteristīgs, which he found of common occurrence among animals in certain islands of the New Hebrides, · He described a pig which, was in an inter mediate, or interser, condition, and said the tendency to intersexuality was inherited.

Dr. A. S. Parkes discussed the value of the sex ratio at birth as evidence regarding sex determination in mammals, and said the old theory that the proportion of the sexes at birth had a close contection with the question of sex determination. was a fallacy, as also was the idea that the ratio: varied under particular condi tions which had an influence on sex determination. It was now evident, on the contrary, that variation in the pro portions of sexes at birth was only very roughly connected with the question of sex determination, the overriding consideration being that there was a heavy pre-natal mortality of males In the care of man the pre-antal mortality was estimated at from 15 to 80 per cent of all comeptions, in pigs 15.5 per cent, in shee 7.25 per cent, in white ice about 10 per cent, and in the rat a very lacked percentage. Amongst these pre-natal deaths, the males were 150 to every 100 females, and this meant, of course, that the proportion of males at birth is considerably lower than at conception, when it might be equal to the proportion of females. The proportion of the sexes at Lirth did, however, vary with the age of the mother and the order of the pregnaner (first or subsequent), and these factors might have some obscura influence sex determination. The proportion of males declines as the age of the mother increases, and the male ratio is also higher in first births and declines subsequently. It was probable that the proportion of the sexes at birth was indirectly controlled by the ratio of the "X" and "Y" spermatozon." These were different in size, and the larger were probably more energetic and mobile.

on

In reply to a question. Dr. Parkes saul- the alleged greater proportion of male humans bru after a war was & GOD- troversial subject. There was no doubt that more males, proportionately, had been torn since this last war, but the fact bad. not been satisfactorily explained.
