DEBRIS OF BATTLE.

THE BREAKING · DOWN PROCESS.

Mr. E, N. Pickett, whe hasrorganised the breaking down of the huge dumps of ammunition in France and Belgium." gave some interesting details of the work in a lecture delivered at Apolina. Hall.

Mr. Pickett dealt with the méthods ems. ployed by him during the last three years to convert this huge max of explosive material and dangerous gases to economie urs. A cinema Blur explaining many of the prozesses was shown.

He said the whole of Northern France had bereit cleaned up. Brizish ammunition had been broken down, the poison gas dis sipatel, mind somne 250 peu tohs of material had been returned to commercial us The French War Offer first gave him the" opportunity to treat 25.000 tons of capr tured German ammunition. Later, at the invitation of Belgium, he broke up and neutralised all the accumulated and sea- tered British, French, and German ane munition lying in Belgium, Lord Inver- | forth, then Minister of Munitions, sent For him, as he undertook, the breaking up of the British ammunition Wing in FrancN

20,600 TONS A MONTHL

During the last three years he had command of tea large depots belonging to the Allied Governments, covering an enor TROUS DAY. Each month. 5.000 employés dealt with 1,000,000 shells. 300,000 grm- ades, and three-quarters of a million | fuses, representing the breaking down of

20,000 tone a month.

The primary object in breaking am- monition was to extract the fus from the shell. He had the shell put in a crude enbicle, buttressed with stubags and rail- way, sleepers, through which the shell pro trusted, the workmen could operate with special fuse tools. The fuse, having ben extractel, the charge was either wash! ed out or burnt out! In the case of fier. shell the same marked shells were often found to be filled with different mix- tore TN.T., pieric acid, and T.N. B. would come out of exactly similar shell-. As regards the technical design of an munition and the quality of its common. eats, Britain was infinitely superior to Germany. Taking as the requirements of a good projectile reliability, regularit A uniform performance, resistance to exposure, and maximum effect, he found | that Hripi-h projectiles were superior to Germain all details with the possible | esleeption of maximam effect.

The German gaine was liable to spon taneous detonation, and, in his opinion, their powder pellet fuse was a great error. The Germans produced a wonder. Pinlly high-grade T.N.T.. it was such perfect material that he determined to recover it. Large shells, weighing nearly a ton were ent in half the T.N.T. extracted. Mihons of rounds of ammunition and holts of charges for quick-firing guns were dealt with by a ampliance which ripped out the bullets and separated the brass ease from the copper attachments, while a shire of water swept away the pantur,

CRINERING GRENADES. Th· grenades were put into a crunching machine, broken up like walnuts; the debris were fired, so that when the com- bustibles were destruyed and the fire exi Linguished the iron

-scrap could be i collected. Many thousands of tons of.| surdite were burnt on the French const. A ittle powder-trail was laid; when it was fred and the coedite venched. a flame of 60 or 301 fret would loup up, the heat of furious intensity, yielding a gassy but noi a muxious vapour. It took at least two! years to find out how to deal with, the " Kask Coneinding. Mr. Pickett sid: My special work in France was to re enver as much of the steel as possible, so tedd be returned to industrial pùr. pose, and be the case-of Hapa nữ - che chemicals used in manufacturing gas, such a stanie chloride, recovering it be cause it has a considerable.market value. The chemicals, like amatol, in high plosive shells, have been, segured as valathle fertilisers indeed, my" job was to clear up everything, including small mountains of ald in cartridge cases and literally millions of wooden aminunition boxes,

From the cordite carriers the zine line ing is removed, and the cars are being sold for flour and corn bins. Parts af old machinery are went to England to In marle into besteside, hievele parts, agricultural implements, and pots and pans. A SOCIALIST FAILURE.

LESSON FROM THE AUSTRIAN RAILWAYS.

In a published summary of the report. of Sir William deworth, the British ex- i pert, on the railwaye of Austria, especial stress is laid upon the fact that the lower classes of railway workers, who are far too many, are paid wages which represent full gold parity, while all the clerks and higher officials are paid very much less,

Passenger Fares must be brought up to world parity, which will mean that they will have to be more than doubled.. At]." present the third-class fare in Austria in at the rate of about three miles a penny, and all failway workers and their families pay little or nothing,

The deficit on the Austrian State rail- way this last Budget year was about £6,000,000, Sir William thinks that in general the principle of economy in win istration is more important than continual raising of tariffs to meet deficits...

The publication in Vienna of this, sun- mary raised a storm of indignation among the Socialists, who have looked upon the railways us their special preserve, have, flooded the lines with superfluous workers, and claimed free tickets and ridiculously cheap ordinary fares o persistently that, as Sir William's main recommendations elearly show, their application of Socialis tio principles to the State railways is the chief cause of Austria's financial difficul tice.

Extensive purchases of aeroplanes have been made in Great Britain by the Soviet Government.
