HEALTHIER WOMANHOOD. ANEMIA OF YOUNG GIRLS DISAPPEARING.

{{BY "THE TIMES"; MEDICAL CORRESPONDENT.)

In the current issue of Guy's Hospital | Reports an article appears by Dr. J. M. H. Campbell, of Guy's. Hospital, on the subject of chlorosis,, the anemia of young women, which at one period was NO pre valent in Englnad and other countries, The interesting fact is adduced that this disease is rapidly disappearing both from Europs and America.

This phenomenon has much more than a medical interest, for it is the opinion" of the author of the paper that the greater amount al exerciso and the nam ready access to foshair enjoyed by | women to-day are largely responsible for the diminution of this malady. What usal to be known as “the green, sickness"! in fact is yielding to rational methods of life.

The percentage reduction of chlorosis observed in Britain, so far as figures could be collected, is shown in the follow ing table:-

It is held that chlorosis is an exaggera- tion of a normal condition rather than a disease sui generis. Thus the inference is, perhaps, justified that the general health of womanhood throughout the civilized world improved at or about the That beginning of the present century. was the time when the first insistent do. quand for an outdoor life and regular xercise for school girls and even for grown women began to be made.

The author of the present paper does not seem to invour, the idea that better. feeding is a contributory cause of im provement. Nor does he support the view this this disease is occupational" in the sense that it is confined to certain eal- ings. His conclusion is that the dis appearance of chlorosis is a very real change and that it is mainly due to in- proved conditions of employment allow ing more opportunity for fresh air and exercise. He adds. It should be pas sible to test such a hypothesis by compar ing the amount of chlorosis among the class of Turkish women living in close con- finement and among the present women of the other Balkan States where most other conditions are fairly similar. Possibly some doctors with experience of the Near Fast could provide such information, but I have not been able; to find it."
