WHALE PROBLEMS

THE DISCOVERY EXPEDITION AND ITS OBJECTS.

ARE WE CÀTCHING TOO MANY:

The new voyage of Captain Scott's old) ship, the Discovery, which is to be mule, as soon as she is refitted, to the neigh bourhood of South Georgia and the South Shetlands, hug bern, designed with the object of obtaining as much evidence as possible about the natural history of the whale, in order that the proper seja indy be taken for preserving the whaling in- dustry,

The importance of the expedi-, tion, not only to the industry, but to science and the nation. was explained by} Sir Sidney Harmer. Director of this Natural History Museum, who is a mem- ber of the Committee which has been: aj point by the Colonial Offier to direct | the preparations, in an interview with a representativi of The filarrres

Since the year 1005." he sail," the whaling industry has been busting an entirely new district, tl dependencies of the Falkland Islands and especially the neighbourhood. of South Georgia and the South Shetland islands. They have been catching whales at a very great rate, and we are rather nnxious show the future. For we know froni the previous recorda of whaling that wint has always happen- ed in that they have gone too fast and the stock has become iløpleted, with the

"My child's body, lace and hands, were covered with water dilsters which formed sort eruptions. The Itching and burning were so severe that she could not sleep, and her face and body were so badly dia- figured that she was terrible to see.

"I tried different remedies which were of no avall. I read an adver- Elsement for Culleur Soap and Dint- ment and went for a free sample, which helped - her, I bought a further supply which completely healed her." (Signed) Mrs." Mar. garet Richardson, 24, Diana St., Newcastle-on-Tyne, Eng.

GREENLAND PISHERY EXHAUSTED.

For more than two centuries whalers used to go to the Arctic regions, pits. bergen, and Davis Straits particularly,! in pursuit of the Greenland wha. That industry came to an end last century; nid a'though I should not like to say there are no Greenland whaler left, theme are not enough to hunt any longer, and yet formerly they yere found in nor- + mous numbers. There are many instans of the same kind in other parts of the worl

of the Past

26, Das Varx ROAD,

CENTRAL.

We have no interest, of course, in the A, TACK & Co., profts of the industry, but we are inter ented in the preservation of the fauna of the world. Besides, it has to be re membered that whales were of great im portance, almost vital importance, during. the war. The main object in hunting then is to obtain gil, and whale oil is en of the main sourerg of glycerine, which can be made into nitm-glycerins. and so into explosives.

There is also another point of im- partans about whales and the war. There was a shortage of fat, and the quantity available bad to be used partly for food and netly for explosives. It the source of glycerine derived from whale oil had had to be taken from something else) which was used as food it would have affected very seriously the already short | Aupply. Besides, whale oil itself has a food value and is used in the manufacture of margarine,

THE NARROW SEAS.

Whilst everyone is agreed that whales must not be exterminated, the whaling companies are inclined to be a little un duly optimistic. One argument put for- ward on their behalf is that whaling is actually taking place in a very restricted area, whilst the ceraus of the world aru extremely large, and that "therefore it does not matter much what happens in small district as South Georgia and the Scuth Shetlands.

The answer to this argument is that whales do not stay in the same place nil the time. They undoubtedly migrate long distances, and if individual whales go over a very large part of the world at various times it is quite possible to exter minate them generally even if you res- trict operations to a single place.

"There is another point worth men. tioning: If you will look at the map you will see that the Anarctic Ocean goes all round the south end of the world, but it is specially narrow at the southern end of South America, where the industry in being carried out, and therefore if whale migrate round the Pole, which there is reason to believe is probable, you have them concentrated into a compara- tively narrow channe', and it is likely that very serious harm may be done by what is going on at the present time.

MIGRATION.

"The problem of migration is one of the very special matters which the Dis covery Expedition will study. We want to ascertain the extent and direction of the migration of whales. Another prob lem is that of reproduction. If you look at what is done for the protection of birds and other animal, it is nearly always considered a good line of defence to pro- tect them as far as possible during the breeding season. Therefore it is clearly important to learn as much as possible about the breading of whales when and where it takes place, and so on.

There is no doubt that whales go down mouth for feeding purposes mainly. Some people are inclined to suppose that the Polar waters are rather barren. That is entirely a mistake. They are ex- tremely rich in the particular things that whales fred on- Whales probably go to warmer regions to breed; and turn down Bouth or north into the colder sons to feed":

TOO OLD AT FORTY KERESY.

ما

The holiday dullness in the political world has been relieved by the novel | walking match between the Liberal M.P.. Mr. Frank Gray, and the Conservative 31.P., Captain Ainsworth, of 23 miles from Bunbury Cress to Oxford, carrying fall army kit and rifle, 9 pounds in weight. The early morning start was witnessed by hundreds. The challenger, Mr, Gry, who is six years younger, took the fead and covered the first four miles in 58 minutes. Half way, Captain Ains worth led by 25 yards, but a mile and a half from Oxford was forced to retire with статр.

Mr. Gray also collapsed three miles from Oxford, but, restiming, finish. ed in six hours, failing ta a dead faint at the winning post.
