"FOOTBALL SEASON OPENS.
[FROM Ora owŃ' CORRESPONDENT.}
EDINBURGH, August 2nd. - At the opening of each fresh season it is customary to segu the merits of the clubs for a possible challenger to the supres macy so long enjoyed by Hangers and Celtic, and while a scrutiny of results shows that the pair are pursuing their usual course, it also discles the fact that in the two, Edinburgh clubs, Heart of Mid- fothiau and Hibernian, they are likely to End foemen worthy of their steel. Both, Eastern tens made a brilliant beginning, and while neither Clyde nor Third Lanark cay be termed strong oppanguts, there was a decisiveness about the Edinburgh clubs' victories that augurs, well for the future, From the sentimentul point of view the most cheering feature was the triumphane mentry of Queen's - Purk into Fint League football. It was generally conced-
that in being asked to travel to Kit- mardock for their opening game the old club were being set, a serious problem. and yet not only did they rotara with a victory but with a handsome env at that The other promoted club, Clydebank, were not so successful, they filled to maintain at Aberdeen the good form which they dis played earlier in the week against Partick: Thistle and were beaten rather casily. The way in which Rangers secured their goals against Motherwell showed that they had lost none of their last year's brilliance. Although Celtic's win over Falkirk was only represented by one goal, they were full value for their victory. Dandes, who showed a big number of changes from last season, put up a very poor show at Kirkcaldy against Raith Rorers, whoe
football, if not superlative, was always much too good for the Tayside men, Clyde, 1; Airdrieoninus, 1. Partick Thistle, 1; Clydebank, 1. Aberdeen, 3; Clydebank, 1. Airdrieonians, 3; Hamilton Acad.; 2. Celtic, 9: Falkirk, 1.

After one of the most interesting strug gles in the annals of the competition the Scottish Counties Cricket Championship has been won by Perthshire, and on their season's performances it cannot be gaiusald that they are worthy champions. No other competitiors have shown the same consis tener, their preformances with bat and ball and in the field being invariably of a high standard. The elements dested Forfarshire the opportunity of equalling. Perthshire's record, the Broughty Ferry Club's match against Clackmannan County at Alloa having to be
be abandoned as a draw. At that stage, however, Forfarshire had none the batter of the argument, as, while they had dismissed the Wee County for a moderats total, "they themselves had Ist two wickets for no runs..

THE EDEN GOLF TOURNAMENT.
Mr. R. H. de Montmorency has demon strated afresh that a man after passing the 50th milestone of his life is fit, to play in the best of golfing company. Bis school duties at Eton have prevented his this into in the Amateur Champion- but he has always bren a force in British golf. He has played for England against Scotland, and he was in the Brit. ish team at Hoylake two seasons ago, when
he was beaten by Bobby Jones, now the United States Open Champion. Mr. Montmorency
who has been instrumental-
in taking the of the Eden tour ament at St. Andrews to the R. and clubhouse for the first time, dominated the tournament from its very commence- ment. George Wilkie, the Leven veteran, one of the finest products, of the Fife school, led him by a single stroke in the qualifying stage, but from that time no. body seemed to look anywhere else for the winder.
CHAMPIONS AT DORNOCH...

Mr. C. H. Bicknell, headmaster of the Mercer School, speaking at the specch day on July 23rd, aid that there seemed to be less private enterprise than formerly, judging from the desire exprened by so many parents for "safe jobs, with a pen- sion at the end," for their boys.
