had a quarrel, and was seen to strike the WEDNESDAY, 5th, to SATURDAY, 8th September,

Chinese with the butt end of his carbine. A young dikh policeman in the vicinity went to the spot and arrested his eaun tryman. He made enquiries, and as the result of what he was told went farther back along the main road, and discovered a Chinese youth dying down with a bullet wound in his leg. The man alleged that the fudiant watchman was responsible for the | won. He was conveyed to the Govern- nient Civil Hospital immediately, after his leg had been doctored by early Chine with tobacco and dirty rags. It is believed that blood poisoning set in, and yesterday morning the Magistrate (Mr. J. R. Wood) went to the Hospital to take the man's depositions. as it is feared he will not live. The watchman will be charged in due courses

ABNORMAL TIMES. REMAINING KONGMOON STEAMERS WORKING AT HIGH PRESSURE.

Capt. homias Brown, master of the 3.8. King Fook Chrong, a river steamer run- ning etween here and Kongmoon, was prosecuted by the Water Police at the Marine Magistracy, yesterday morning, for working cargo on Sunday, the 2nd inst, without a permit from the Harbour Master. The case was heard before the Harbour Master and Marine Magistrate (Commander C. W. Beckwith, R.N.).

The defendant pleaded guilty" to the charge.

Sub-Inspector Bond. informed "the" Court that at 3.45 pan. on Sunday last he saw the vessel unloading cargo at the Queen Street wharf. She had then un loaded 150 bags of rice and sugar. The master told him he was unloading be. cause the ship was in a dangerous con dition. She was harily overlorded..

Giving evidence. Capt. Brown said his Vessel arrived from Kongmoça: ❤ 18.30 a.m. on Saturday with a small general cargo. This she unloaded and fodding! of a new cargo was commenced. In all some 900 tons of merchandise was taken on board, this being completed on the Saturday, when she had not gone down to her mark. She was quite safe. On Sunday afternoon, about 000 pakengérs with their baggage came on, with the re- sult, that the vessel went down below her mark and it becaïne necessary to jettison, some of the cargo.

A dinner was held at the Club last night, when Mr. Decker proposed the health of the Queen, and made an interesting speech. He commented on the War, and said it was a merciful thing SATURDAY, SEPT. Sth. that their country had not been embroiled. in the great, strife with the majority of the European nations. He commented. also, on the peaceful state of Holland during the proant. Guren's reign, and on her kindliness and geniality to her people. Mr. Decker touched on the Japanese calamity, and expressed the geral anxiety for the safety of their countrymen in that stricken country.

Other toasts were honoured and The Dutch community speeches made. was well represented, as were the other communities of the Colony.
