An earthquake in the neighbourhood of Tokyo and Yokohama occurred at noon on Saturday, Sept. 1st. The first news of it enme in a message from Osaka which said that an "earthquake, lasting over six minutes, was felt at noon. was a perpendicular movement. "All clocks stopped. It is feared that a serious earthquake has occurred at Tokyo. All telephone lines are interrupted between Tokyo and Osaka." Later telegrams confirni, these fears, and show the calamity to be one of an unprecedented character. We give them in the order reveived ;---

A slight vibration was again felt at 9.26 this afternoon. According to the Osaka" Observatory the seismic centre is prob ably the zu peninsula. The seismo- graph showed vibration for nearly nu hour an half. The damage done at Tokyo, Yokohama and Yokosuka is believed to be serious. The Tokaido railway line (the trunk line thringgh Japan) iş seri- ously damaged in several places.
At Nagoya, Osaka, Kole, and Kyoto there is no damage. Nagasaki did not feel the vibration. Telegraph and telephone communication between Omka and Tokyo is totally interrupted.
