AMERICAN SWIMS THE CHANNEL

The thrilling nature of Harry 'Sullivan's inal struggle was revented in the story told to members of the party when he returned to Dover on August 7th.

Sullivan covered the firet five miles in three hours, and, encouraged by relays of swimmers, was only a few miles of the French const int 6 o'clock on Mon- day morning, swimming with unabated energy and only complaining of pains in the abdomen. They came the great fight with the tides, which was so intense that late in the afternoon abandonment seemed imminent. The swimmer was buf- fetted up and down the coast, swimming strongly, but not making any headway. against the set-o from the coust. He hell grimly on, however, until, still ac companied by two swimmers, he stepped ashore before a big crowd, in very tired though fair condition.

Ile used the breast stroke practically throughout, and occasionally took nour ishment. Sullivan was fed only on egg and milk during his swim, and his first request on landing was for an ice cream.

Mrs. Corson abandoned her swim tat midnight two miles off Sangatto after 12} hours. Towards the end she was much Inocked about by the brokra zen.
